Spreckels Theatre Company Presents 1776

By:

The critically acclaimed, award-winning Spreckels Theatre Company presents "1776," the Tony Award winning musical which brings history to life as it recalls America's contentious Founding Fathers and their determination to do the right thing for a fledgling nation.

Engaging, witty and passionate, this Broadway musical takes audiences back to the long, hot Philadelphia summer of 1776 when John Adams of Massachusetts, Benjamin Franklin of Pennsylvania and Thomas Jefferson of Virginia bid members of the Second Continental Congress to proclaim independence from the tyranny of British monarchy and adopt the United States Declaration of Independence.

"1776" opened at the 46th Street Theatre in 1969. Known today as the Richard Rodgers Theatre, it is the same Broadway theater where "Hamilton: An American Musical" recently received wide critical acclaim and record breaking attendance. The original Broadway production of "1776" received several theater awards including the Tony and New York Drama Critics' Circle awards for Best Musical.
