Smuin Returns with DANCE SERIES 01, 2/22- 3/24

Smuin Returns with DANCE SERIES 01, 2/22- 3/24Smuin Contemporary American Ballet brings Mountain View and Carmel their first look at Annabelle Lopez Ochoa's critically lauded and transcendent piece Requiem for a Rose, set to what many consider to be Schubert's most romantic string adagio, from the Quintet in C. Ochoa is an internationally acclaimed choreographer who creates contemporary dance works and also adapts her style for classical ballet companies.

San Francisco Classical Voice described Requiem for a Rose as "perfection!" Also on the program is Michael Smuin's joyful tribute to Ol' Blue Eyes, Fly Me to the Moon, hailed as a "crowd-pleaser" by the San Francisco Chronicle.

This blend of ballet and popular dance is the embodiment of the smooth and stylish melodies that have inspired generations, including Sinatra's renditions of "I've Got You Under My Skin" and "The Lady is a Tramp."

Performed against the twinkling backdrop of a glowing night sky, the ballet highlights warm and witty favorites and culminates in a full chorus, high-kicking "New York, New York." Rounding out the bill is the return of Garrett Ammon's bold Serenade for Strings. Set to Tchaikovsky's score of the same name, this work is a vibrant new interpretation of a piece inexorably tied to the iconic 1934 Balanchine ballet.

The Dance Series 01 program debuted in San Francisco last fall with the San Francisco Chronicle calling it "intriguing...ecstatic...Smuin Artistic Director Celia Fushille has a keen eye for inventive ballet choreographers!" San Francisco Classical Voice concurred, describing the program as " tune with the demand for ballets that aren't the same old."
