This June, Shady Shakespeare Theatre Company presents The Lion in Winter, James Goldman's compelling drama about a king's search for a successor within his feuding family.

It's Christmas 1183, and Henry II of England has gathered his family for the holidays. He has temporarily released his estranged wife, Eleanor of Aquitaine, from prison, and all of his sons have come home to see who their aging father will name as his successor. Henry intends to give the throne to his youngest son, John-but Eleanor and the other boys, Richard and Geoffrey, have plans of their own. As if the situation isn't tense enough, King Philip II of France has arrived to demand that Henry Carry out their bargain: either Philip's sister, Alais, marries Richard, or Henry must relinquish the strategic Vexin region of France. But there's a complication there, too: during her stay in England, Alais has become the king's mistress. The stage is set for family fireworks on a royal scale, combining both taut drama and sharp wit.

The Lion in Winter runs from June 1 to 23 at the Historic Hoover Theater in San Jose. Performances take place Thursday through Sunday evenings plus Sunday afternoons. Tickets are $25 for adults and $15 for students and seniors. Up to six children 17 and under are free with each paid adult admission. Tickets can be purchased now at www.shadyshakes.org. The Historic Hoover Theater is located at 1635 Park Avenue, across from the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum in San Jose's Rose
Garden district.
