Marin Theatre Company announced today that, due to enthusiastic audience response, they will extend Topdog/Underdog by seven performances. Bay Area audiences now have the opportunity to experience the critically acclaimed revival of Suzan-Lori Parks's Pulitzer Prize-winning play through Sunday, October 28.

Receiving "Wild Applause," the San Francisco Chronicle's highest rating, Topdog/Underdog has been called "exhilarating" by Robert Hurwitt (Chronicle), "explosive" by Georgia Rowe (San Francisco Examiner) and "a modern work of art" by Chad Jones (TheaterDogs blog). David Templeton wrote in this week's North Bay Bohemian that "easily, this is one of the best productions of the year."

Winner of the 2002 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Topdog/Underdog delves into the rivalry of two brothers – Lincoln, the elder, is trying to make a go at honest work after years of hustling three-card monte; and Booth, the younger, is a wannabe looking to learn the tricks of his brother's illegitimate trade. Trapped by their poverty, family history and ominously prophetic given names, these two black men soon realize they are locked in a dangerous game of deception, sparring over just which one's the Player and which one's the Played. MTC's production is the first locally produced professional staging in the Bay Area. Complete fact sheet is available here.

Director Timothy Douglas and actors Biko Eisen-Martin and Bowman Wright all make their MTC debuts with Topdog/Underdog. Complete artist biographies are available here.

Topdog/Underdog is on the California Department of Education Recommended Literature List for grades 9-12. Through MTC's Student Matinee program, 330 teens from seven Marin high schools have seen this production in the last two weeks.
