Award-winning playwright, actor and journalist David Templeton brings his "strange but true" real life story to Napa, in the form of "Wretch Like Me," live on stage for two performances only September 5th at 8:00 p.m. and September 6th at 2:00 p.m.

Lucky Penny audiences may remember David Templeton from his chilling performance as Bill Sykes in "Oliver" earlier this year. In 'Wretch Like Me,' David explores his own personal history, beginning with his first baptism (he's been baptized three times!) and takes audiences through his life amidst the Bible-thumping evangelists and surf boarding "Jesus freaks" of Southern California in the 1970s. Along the way, David introduces a parade of marvelously detailed characters: his breathtakingly to-the-point mother; a schoolyard evangelist known as The Jesus Lady; a pair of blissed-out Jesus Club veterans named Righteous Rick and Jesse P; the super-serious Rev. Dude (a former acid-dropping surfer guy who found Jesus in a tent in Hawaii while tripping on magic mushrooms); Cindy, a beautiful young believer who will stop at nothing to bring others to the Lord (including wetting her pants, if necessary). Hallelujah.

"Wretch Like Me" has been called "a heartbreaking little comedy about growing up, losing faith, and finding joy." It was featured in a 14-performance run at the 2014 Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland, among other engagements.
