John Kelly Comes To The Rrazz Room With Joni Mitchell Homage 7/30-8/1

By:

Performance artist John Kelly comes to The Rrazz Room at The Hotel Nikko, 222 Mason, San Francisco CA with four performances of his legendary theatrical homage to the music of singer/songwriter Joni Mitchell. Performances are at 9 PM with the Sunday August 2 show at 4 PM. Tickets are $27.50-$30, and can be purchased at www.therrazzroom.com or directly through ticketweb.com or at 866 468 3399.

Paved Paradise Redux pays tribute to the great singer Joni Mitchell, with "Joni" in concert as Kelly does the vocals, guitar and dulcimer. The "score" is an array of songs from the various stages of her career; the "book" of the show is her actual words, culled from interviews. The show comes to San Francisco after an Off Broadway run.

In Paved Paradise Redux, John Kelly has created a work that is at once haunting and hilarious; his musicianship is at its finest in an event that satisfies even the most hardened Joni-phile; the original arrangements, from acoustic to electric, are utterly intact, and Kelly's spot-on original-key recreation of her vocals is uncanny. His countertenor uncannily evokes Mitchell's own smoky soprano as he sings songs from the various stages of her career in their original key. Kelly is accompanied on keyboard by musical director Zecca Esquibel, as well as additional musicians. The evening also features an original video component featuring Kevin Joseph as journalist Tavis Smiley in a recreation of his PBS interview with Mitchell.

John Kelly is an author, choreographer, director, performance and visual artist. He has received numerous awards including two Bessies, two Obies, the American Choreographer Award, a CalArts Alpert Award, and fellowships from The Guggenheim Foundation and The Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study. In 2010, he will be an artist-in-residence at The Park Avenue Armory and at The Civitella Ranieri Foundation. He is also developing a project with writer/director Moises Kaufman.
