Cynthia Reeves Projects Presents Works at the New artMKT Art Fair, 5/20 -22

Following the success of Jaehyo Lee's debut at the recent Sotheby's Hong Kong Contemporary Asian Art Auction, CYNTHIA-REEVES Projects presents select sculptural works from the artist's South Korean studio. His sculpture will be one of four works requested by the directors of the fair to install in their public area: a charred wood 'tower' embellished with highly polished stainless steel nails shaped to evoke calligraphic forms. Lee also works with solid wood, exposing the grain patterns to enhance his unexpected functional art forms. A mid-career retrospective of these two modes of working just ended at the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts, where one of Lee's exhibited standing sculptures was officially acquired for their Permanent Collection. 

Painting and works on paper, by both domestic and International Artists, compliment the three-dimensional artwork. These works include abstracted landscapes by the young Brooklyn painter, Allison Gildersleeve, who documents the New England landscape of her childhood with a vibrant use of fresh color and energized brushwork.

Dawn Black, a young artist who recently completed a residency at the prestigious McColl Center for the Arts, combines her exceptional compositional eye with a wry twist on the symbols of our culture's vernacular, often resulting in unsettling and provocative tableaus. Shen Chen and Lianghong Feng, both accomplished painters from Beijing, are well represented at artMRKT with new, large-scale canvases. Photographs of an exciting, new performative work by Danielle Julian Norton are being shown for the first time; Norton's work is a collaborative project done in conjunction with Tarrah Krajnak.

Suite 42 Projects: 

Cynthia-Reeves presents elements of a new art series entitled, "Heart Abortion", a series by Suite 42 Projects, a collaboration between artists Danielle Julian Norton and Tarrah Krajnak founded in 2009. Photographic documentation of "Heart Abortion" will be on view at Cynthia-Reeves (Booth 315) at artMRKT San Francisco, May 20 - 22. Additional elements from the project, including the video and a performance work, are currently on exhibition at the Columbus Museum in Columbus, Ohio.

The series "Heart Abortion" is multi-layered and includes an artist book, video, live performance, and still photography. Conceptually, the series explores the stages of an intimate relationship between ambiguous metaphorical characters who act out their loss of identity and the inherent tension between self and other. The work produced is at the boundary of performance, making related shifts in subjective and objective perception, and the subtle difference between being, acting, and performing. In these particular works (large format photographs plus video) they perform as characters that mirror one another in absurd repetitive acts referencing the psychology of intimacy, aggression, and desire.

Danielle Julian Norton received a Masters of Fine Arts from the University of Notre Dame, and BFA from the Columbus College of Art and Design, where she is now faculty. Her work is represented by Cynthia-Reeves in New York. Norton is the recipient of several grants and residencies, including: the Ohio Arts Council Individual Creativity Grant; Headland Center for the Arts Residency, San Francisco; Vermont Studio Center Residency; and upcoming residencies in Dresden, Germany and in Omaha in 2011. Recent exhibitions include: the Midwest Museum of American Art; San Angelo Museum of Fine Art; Elmhurst Art Museum; Snite Museum of Art, and, currently, the Columbus Museum in Ohio. Her installation based art projects have been reviewed in the Boston Globe and Sculpture Magazine, among other national publications.

Tarrah Krajnak was born in Lima, Peru 1979. She is currently an artist and educator based in Burlington, VT where she teaches photography at the University of Vermont. Tarrah's artistic practice is driven by a wide range of theoretical concerns including photography's connection to the archive and memory, as well as an interest in the body, gender, and feminist studies. Her work has been exhibited nationally including recent shows at the Firehouse Center; Center for Photography, Woodstock; SF Camerawork; and, the National Museum of Women in the Arts. Her work has been published in Camerawork and most recently in Nueva Luz Journal of Contemporary Photography, and she has received grants from the Vermont Council for the Arts, the Vermont Community Foundation, Women In the Arts Foundation, and Cornell Council for the Arts.
