By:

As part of its 2012 -2013 season, the San Diego Ballet Company (SDB), under the leadership of co-directors Robin Sherertz-Morgan and Javier Velasco, will present:

DON JUAN

February 14, 16, 17, 2013

Lyceum Theatre, Horton Plaza, San Diego

Directed and Choreographed by Javier Velasco

"romantic... assured... expressive... seductive. Velasco mixes things up with the skill of a master chef... making it taste divine." - San Diego Union-Tribune

Lovely and lyrical. Compelling and passionate. For the past two decades, resident choreographer Javier Velasco has been thrilling San Diego audiences with world premieres of ballets set to Shakespeare's classics, romantic waltz's and country music ballads. This year sees the world premiere of the full length, DON JUAN. This breathtaking retelling of Byron's epic poem of love, intrigue, and the folly of humanity springs to life on the Lyceum stage.

Says Velasco, "Usually a ballet is centered around some young female protagonist. Giselle. Sleeping Beauty. Swan Lake. Well, we happen to have a very nice mature male dancer (Maxim Tchernychev, formerly with the Bolshoi) in the company right now, who deserves a bit more than to stand behind a girl in a tutu."

Continues Velasco "But I also wanted to create a ballet that would have some sort of resonance with our local audience. With its Spanish theme and the classical guitar accompaniment that I chose, it really seems like a production for our community."

Javier Velasco has been hailed by the San Diego Union-Tribune as "San Diego's answer to Jerome Robbins" and was listed among people to watch in the art and theater scene by San Diego Magazine. He has supplied dances for productions at the La Jolla Playhouse, Old Globe and has a long-standing relationship with the San Diego Repertory Theatre, where he has directed and choreographed productions of Hairspray, A Christmas Carol, Cabaret and Suds, and many others. He currently serves as artistic director of the San Diego Ballet having created over 80 original pieces for the company since its inception.

San Diego Ballet is a 23-year-old organization dedicated to bringing the finest quality dance productions to San Diego. Our Studios are located at Dance Place San Diego 2650 Truxtun Road, at the NTC Promenade in Point Loma.
