BWW Reviews: THE LION KING Entertains in San Antonio, Texas
We all know the story of The Lion King and how audiences all over the world have been intrigued by this impressive onstage production. There is so much to take in and so much to see, you can scarcely catch your breath before another amazing scene unfolds in front of you. The current tour of The Lion King has hit the San Antonio area and has thrilled audiences in attendance.
As the show opens, the audience is heard audibly gasping as they realize the characters come to life in the aisles of the Majestic Theatre. Applause breaks out as the actors hit the stage and unite in singing the show's opening song, "The Circle of Life." The strength behind the talented performers is obvious as the opening goes off without anyone slipping or falling. The characters in the show, Rafiki (played by Tshidi Manye), Scar (played by Patrick R. Brown), and Mufasa (played by L. Steven Taylor) gave wonderful performances. They showed their past experience really paid off as they performed seamlessly through some very difficult songs. Tshidi Manye adds her own touches to Rafiki and keeps the comedic side of the character but portrays the emotional depth that we all think of. Making Rafiki a strong female character makes it better.
The special effects made it more enjoyable as well. Pride Rock's movements are spectacular as the actors moved effortlessly around and on top of the set as it glided across the stage. The young actors playing Young Simba (played by Tré Jones) and Young Nala (played by Tyrah Skye Odoms) performed as though the roles were written just for them. Their energy and enthusiasm is contagious and the audience often catches themselves tapping a foot or singing along with them. They seemed to have a great time during the huge production of "I Just Can't Wait to Be King."
But, the characters of Timon (played by Nick Cordileone) and Pumbaa (Ben Lipitz) are particular audience favorites. And, although the costumes are bulky, Cordileone and Lipitz make it seem like a part of them. It has been written that the puppet used for Timon is one of the most difficult to master, yet Cordileone makes it look easy. He is very comfortable in his role and it shows.
The Lion King plays at the Majestic Theatre in San Antonio, Texas until January 4, 2015. There will be no shows on Christmas Eve. To get tickets, go to www.majesticempire.com and find yours. Makes a great holiday gift. But, hurry, tickets are very limited.
