Review: ANASTASIA at Majestic Theatre San Antonio
"Heart, don't fail me now. Courage, don't desert me." Based on the 1997 movie of the same name, ANASTASIA tells the story of the rumored surviving Romanov daughter and her journey into her past in order to find her future. Featuring beloved tunes such as "Once Upon a December," "Learn to Do it," and "Journey to the Past," this production includes a stunning score of new songs by Stephen Flaherty. This enchanting musical dives deeper into the story of the lost princess and the family she finds while trying to discover who she is.
The intricate set and special effects were something dreams are made of. Simply dazzling, every small detail did so much to enhance the performance. The screen of trees and Russia passing by with the moving train car did wonders to give the appearance of traveling to Paris. It was as if the audience was right there with the characters in every moment, drawing them in and making them forget the world around them as Anastasia tries to remember.
Lila Coogan's portrayal of the lost princess was astounding. Her wit, spunk, and courage made her character not only relatable but also inspiring to women young and old. Coogan has a special ability to paint vivid pictures with each and every song she sang, bringing a special beauty to her powerful voice. Her solo at the end of Act One was nothing short of spectacular.
With such a strong leading lady, the leading man must also be a force to be reckoned with. Stephen Brower was more than up to the challenge through his brilliant portrayal of Dmitry. Brower brought a likable charm to the conman with a bleak past but big dreams for his future. His rapport with Coogan was such a treat to watch and each scene they shared together was pure magic.
Edward Staudenmayer played the hilarious and loveable 'Master of Deception,' Vlad. His impeccable comedic timing and tremendous voice made the perfect match when paired with Countess Lily (played with equal lively amusement by Tari Kelly).
The entire cast was extraordinarily talented. Each song and dance number had a purpose and was performed beautifully. The show was inspiring, honest and exciting. Every moment was a joy to witness and the final curtain left the audience wishing they could watch it all over again.
