Sergio Mendes Returns to Harris Center!

Sergio Mendes - producer, composer, keyboardist and vocalist - is one of the most internationally successful and influential Brazilian artists of all time, with 40 albums (many of which went gold or platinum) and three Grammy Awards. In 2012, his Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66 LP was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. A feature documentary about him as well as a new album are in the works for 2018. He returns to Folsom for two performances.

Sergio Mendes comes to Stage One on Saturday, January 20, 2018 at 7:30 pm and Sunday, January 21 at 2 pm. Tickets are $28-$58; Premium $68. 50% Discount for Students with ID. They are available online at www.harriscenter.net or from the Harris Center Ticket Office at 916-608-6888 from noon to 6 pm, Monday through Saturday, and two hours before show time. Parking is included in the price of the ticket. The Harris Center is located on the west side of the Folsom Lake College campus in Folsom, CA, facing East Bidwell Street.

With a career spanning five decades, his enduring influence on the music industry continues to evolve. His hit single, "Mas Que Nada," was the first Portuguese language song to ever hit Billboard's U.S. Pop chart and Mendes's signature mix of bossa nova and samba and distinctive pop instrumentation have ultimately come to define Brazilian music. However, it was his group, Sérgio Mendes & Brasil '66 which sparked global stardom. After performing "The Look of Love" at the 1968 Oscars, their version rose to the top 10, quickly followed by such hits as "The Fool on the Hill" and "Scarborough Fair."

Mendes' most iconic album, Herb Alpert Presents Sérgio Mendes & Brasil '66, was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2011, joining Bruce Springsteen's legendary Born in The U.S.A., Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's "I Have a Dream" speech, and the Rolling Stones' Exile on Main St. in the class of historically significant recordings.

That year, in 2011, Mendes released his 39th album, Celebration: A Musical Journey, commemorating his 50 years as a recording artist. The record included both classics from his career as well as new recordings with Ivete Sangalo and Siedah Garrett - among them a remake of "The Fool on the Hill," which he performed the same year at the 2011 MusiCares Gala Honoring Sir Paul McCartney. In 2012, Mendes received an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song for "Real in Rio" from the animated film Rio.

His most recent album, Magic (2014), is a collection of new songs, recorded with a host of friends and special guests including John Legend, will.i.am, Carlinhos Brown and features the 2014 World Cup hit single "One Nation." Mendes continues to tour worldwide and maintains his work as a film composer and producer, while also always working on and developing his own album projects.

According to Billboard, a feature documentary about Sergio Mendes and a new album are in the works for 2018. "The companion record on the Concord label will include new songs co-written with younger songwriters, and versions of the Brazilian maestro's classics featuring intergenerational guests, with some tracks co-produced by will.i.am." John Scheinfeld, whose past work includes The U.S. vs. John Lennon and documentaries about Harry Nilsson and John Coltrane (Chasing Trane), is directing the film. "I am attracted to stories of artists who go their own way, who achieve success on their terms," Scheinfeld told Billboard. "Sergio has done that and more... Professionally, his is a remarkable story of innovation, reinvention and impact. Not only did he create a fresh and unique sound, but he has continued to reinvent and re-imagine it from decade to decade and stayed relevant. Along the way, he has influenced subsequent generations of musicians, including some of today's biggest stars. Although it's been 50 years, Sergio's drive, curiosity and creativity has him still looking forward. How many artists can claim all this as part of their legacy?"
