PAINT IT! - The Apprentice Showcase Comes to Capital Stage

By:
The world premiere of Bobbi Tran's Paint It!, a story of twenty-somethings sharing a New York apartment struggling with love, loss, jealousy, and the struggle to find their true selves. This production will be produced entirely by the 2016-2017 Apprentice Company. Kayla Menz will direct this turbulent portrait of young life. Paint It! is the 2016-2017 Apprentice Company's showcase and will run July 6-22, immediately following select performances of BAD JEWS at Capital Stage.

Moody Sam struggles to paint a fitting memorial to the Vietnam War. Her roommate and former partner Vincent, an ethics and philosophy student at Columbia University, flirts with his new girlfriend, the sweet and naive Maree. Throw in the vivacious but deeply sad Andy and an acerbic, reclusive musician Joan and the apartment erupts and implodes into a whirlpool of conflict, emotion, and in some cases, love. As their individual stories and shared points of connections unfold, it becomes clear that it is impossible to stay, but just as difficult to walk away. Who will make the first move.

Bobbi Tran is from Vietnam and attended the University of the Pacific where he studied playwrighting. He is currently working on another play based on a true story that took place during the Khmer Rouge genocide in Cambodia. Currently, Bobbi is in Vietnam doing missionary work with the Catholic church.

Paint It! will be directed by Kayla Menz, directing apprentice at Capital Stage. She has assistant directed Capital Stage's productions of August: Osage County and Guards at the Taj. It will feature Zane Boyer (Capital Stage debut), Jessica Brooks (August: Osage County, The Santaland Diaries), Leah Daugherty (The Santaland Diaries), Wenona Truong (Stupid F##king Bird), and Cole Winslow (How to Use a Knife). Lighting and sound design by Zane Boyer and Cole Winslow. Costume design by Wenona Truong, and properties design by Jessica Brooks and Leah Daugherty.
Performances for Paint It! will begin with a preview on Thursday, July 6 immediately following Capital Stage's performance of Bad Jews. The production will open Friday, July 7 immediately following the performance of Bad Jews that evening. Performances will continue through Saturday, July 22, 2017. Showtimes will be Thursday though Saturday evenings immediately following the performance of Bad Jews, and Mondays, July 10 and 17 at 7pm. Suggested donation of $10.
