Capital Stage Opens 2013-14 Season with CLYBOURNE PARK, Now thru 10/6

Capital Stage opens its 2013-14 Season THE HOMEFRONT with a Sacramento Premiere and the Winner of the 2011 Pulitzer Prize and 2012 Tony Award for Best Play. CLYBOURNE PARK is a bitingly funny and fiercely provocative new play about the volatile combination of race and real estate. This ferociously sharp play is inspired by Lorraine Hansberry's popular classic A RAISIN IN THE SUN. CLYBOURNE PARK runs from tonight, September 4 through October 6 with a press opening on Saturday, September 7.

Performances for CLYBOURNE PARK will begin with three previews tonight, Sept. 4 at 7pm and Thursday & Friday Sept. 5 and 6 at 8pm. The production will open on Saturday, Sept. 7, 2013 at 8pm. Performances continue for five-weeks through Oct. 6, 2013. Showtimes will be Wednesdays at 7pm, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8pm, and Sundays at 2pm. General tickets range from $20-$38 with a fee of $3.50 applied per ticket. Discount tickets are available as follows: Preview Tickets are $20; Student Rush Tickets are half-price; Senior Sunday Matinee Tickets are $30; and Group Rates are available for parties of 12 or more. CLYBOURNE PARK explodes in two outrageous acts set fifty years apart. Act One takes place in 1959, as nervous community leaders anxiously try to stop the sale of a home to a black family. Act Two is set in the same house in the present day (2009), as the now predominantly African-American neighborhood battles to hold its ground in the face of gentrification. CLYBOURNE PARK contains strong language and is intended for mature audiences.

CLYBOURNE PARK had its world premiere Off-Broadway at Playwrights Horizon in 2010. The play received its UK premiere at The Royal Court Theatre in London in August of 2010. After a triumphant run at the Ahmanson Theatre Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles, it arrived on Broadway in March 2012. This wickedly funny and fiercely provocative play about race, real estate, and the volatile values of each, won nearly every honor the theatre has to give, including the 2012 Tony Award for Best Play, the 2010 Olivier Award, the 2010 Evening Standard Award, and the 2011 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

[Bruce Norris] Bruce Norris is the author of CLYBOURNE PARK, which won the Olivier and Evening Standard Awards (London) for Best Play, 2010, as well as the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, 2011. Other plays include The Infidel (2000), Purple Heart (2002), We All Went Down to Amsterdam (2003), The Pain and the Itch (2004), The Unmentionables (2006) and A Parallelogram (2010) all of which had their premieres at Steppenwolf Theatre, Chicago. His newest play Domesticated will be produced by Lincoln Center Theatre in 2013. His work has been seen at Playwrights Horizons (New York), Woolly Mammoth Theatre (Washington D.C.) n (Chicago), Philadelphia Theatre Company, and Staatstheater Mainz (Germany), among others. He is also the 2009 recipient of the Steinberg Playwright Award.

Michael Stevenson directs this Sacramento premiere with a cast that includes Shannon Mahoney (ENRON), Stephanie Altholz* (REASONS TO BE PRETTY, ERRATICA), Aaron Wilton* (ENRON), Beethovan Oden* (THE MOUNTAINTOP), Jonathan Rhys Williams* (HEDDA GABLER, ENRON, TRUE WEST), as well as newcomers to Capital Stage Dan Fagan, and Atim Udoffia.
