Raise your voice, raise your laughter, your praise, your accolades and shout hallelujah! Sister Act is fabulous, baby. The Broadway musical has all the heart of the original Whoopi Goldberg film, with new plot developments and extra soul.

When Singer Deloris Van Cartier witnesses a murder, she takes refuge where no one would expect, the local abbey. Her unusual prayers and trip to the next-door bar don't fit her new wardrobe, but her talents come in use teaching the nuns' choir, and when the murderer and his gang come looking for her, only sisterly love can save her.

The story, characters and contrast between the outside "world" and the Catholic Church are a delight. Fantastic solos highlight supporting characters: Sister Mary Patrick's (Florrie Bagel) bubbly personality, Sister Mary Robert's (Ashley Moniz) gradual change from shy postulant to belting star, Mother Superior's (Hollis Resnik) aversion to change, cop Sweaty Eddie's (Chester Gregory) daydreams and even gangsters' tips on wooing a nun with romance. The sassy, spicy Ta'Rea Campbell as Sister Marry Clarence, or Deloris in disguise, leads the miraculous ensemble.

Although the sets consist mostly of flimsy backdrops, a stained glass scenic design featuring a statue of the Virgin Mary adds a giant visual pop to the production's first and second act finales. Most of the "pop" is already there, though, thanks to the loud and energetic cast, which includes members of the original Broadway production. Alan Menken's music incorporates both upbeat, catchy tunes and poignant moments, all surprisingly unique compared to his usual Disney scores. The production leaves audiences happy, and the pre-show energy and excitement lasts well past the company bows.
