Debra Kaye's FANTASY FOR FLUTE AND PIANO to Premiere at St. Andrew's in Beacon Image

Acclaimed American composer Debra Kaye will celebrate the world premiere of her new work Fantasy for flute and piano at 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 23.

The composition will be performed by flutist Carl Gutowski and pianist Akiko Sasaki and is part of a program called "Degrees of Separation" that explores the performer/composer relationship. Other works on the program include J.S. Bach's Sonata in A Major, BWV 1032, Copland's Duo for Flute and Piano and Richard Wilson's Flutations.

The concert will take place at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 15 South Ave., Beacon, NY. While the concert is free, donations will be accepted and there is a reception following the concert.

Fantasy was commissioned as a wedding gift by Gutowski for his niece. Through the flute and piano instrumentation, Kaye's score evolves as a series of variations that fall out of synch at times, but always are linked to one another in harmonious partnership. She created the work in rondo form to reflect the enduring nature of their relationship through the ever returning theme of love.

Kaye has been hailed as "a unique voice in American music" for her "transcendent, witty, colorful and profound" works blending her deep classical roots with a wide range of influences including jazz, world music, folk, experimental improvisation, world events and sounds of daily life. With a catalogue of close to 50 works, chamber and orchestral music, art songs, a choral and theatrical composition, her work has been honored with multiple ASCAP Plus Awards for her "creative contributions to American music." Her debut CD And So It Begins, produced by Grammy winning Judith Sherman, was recognized as "an album that will surely stand the test of time," and included on Ted Gioia's list of top 100 CDs.

Winner of the SME Concerto Competition and featured artist on WQXR and WOMR, Gutowski's career has spanned more than 40 years as a soloist, chamber and orchestral musician. He has performed in master classes with noted musicians including Paula Robison and studied chamber music with members of the Cleveland Orchestra. He is also a software engineer working in the fields of aeronautics, publishing, education commerce and finance and is the concert manager of the award-winning Howland Chamber Music Circle.

Pianist Akiko Sasaki has appeared as a soloist and chamber artist throughout Europe and the United States including appearances at Merkin Hall, WQXR's Green Space, Roulette, the Newman Center of Performing Arts, Chandler Center for the Arts and as a winner of New York City's Artist International competition, she made her solo debut concert at Carnegie Hall in 2006. Sasaki has collaborated with many prominent artists from the Metropolitan Opera, Harlem and Pacifica Quartets.
