There is a certain kind of violence that comes with being truly seen. A quiet violence. An all-consuming rush. To be known is to be undone. But there is an even greater danger when that exposure is misread and desire is diagnosed as something monstrous.
Hystyria is a deliberately queer, physical, "gorgeous and delicious" adaptation of Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu's 1872 novella Carmilla, written and directed by Riley K Webster and assistant directed by Kayla Joya. Laura's life has been carefully maintained, pathologized, and contained by the patriarchal family structure of Metternich-era Austria since her mother's early death. She is quiet. She is neat. Until Carmilla arrives. The mysterious and enigmatic young woman threatens to undo every careful stitch that has bound Laura through her upbringing. In turn, however, something ancient, animal, and undeniable threatens to bubble over within Carmilla herself when she finally meets her mirror.
Hystyria will haunt Teatro LATEA with the NY Winterfest for a limited run of three nights only; January 29th at 9pm, January 31st at 12pm, and February 1st at 8:30pm. The show runs approximately 80 minutes with no intermission.
