The Divas 2006

Frank’s Closet is a paean to queerness. With a variety of beautifully performed earworms and a never–ending stream of jokes, it’s a tongue–in–cheek show that may not glitter with a steamy plot, but still enchants with its musical numbers.

Priscilla, Queen of the Desert is a jukebox musical with book by Stephan Elliott and Allan Scott, using well-known pop songs as its score. Adapted from Elliott's 1994 movie , the musical tells the story of two drag queens and a trans woman, who contract to perform a drag show at a resort in Alice Springs, a town in the remote Australian desert.

An outré camp classic of 21st century British musical theatre, the iconic Frank’s Closet will return to its musical hall roots this summer at the legendary Wilton’s Musical Hall. 

While there are three mini-operas within the SHORTS programme, this reviews centres around two of them: LA VOIX HUMANE and THE IMPRESARIO. Over the last couple of years, I have been lucky enough to attend various operas staged in Cape Town. They are magnificent: grand and opulent.

A special one-off performance of Dudes Sing the Divas! is coming to The Other Palace. Performed by Ben Barrow, Jordan Donnelly and Robert Donnelly, the performance comes to the Studio on 4 June.

Priscilla the Party is based on The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, a movie from the 90s that was adapted into a musical and has since travelled the world. But, instead of a classic musical, guests are invited into the Cockatoo Club, standing in front of the stage that is able to be taken apart and moved around the floor.

Acclaimed singer-songwriter Orfeh (LEGALLY is making her Café Carlyle debut with a residency on March 21, 22, and 23. Orfeh will be singing “the music of divas that influenced her life, career and singular voice.” This will be Orfeh’s most intimate concert yet, in the historic Café Carlyle on 35 East 76th Street at Madison Avenue.

It’s fun, a bit quirky, and has a Fellini-sized cast that should make your head spin in all the right ways. Apparently, it takes an army to make a diva, but then again, is that a surprise?
