African Voices 1996

Center Theatre Group, in collaboration with The Fire This Time Festival and Watts Village Theater Company, will present a second season of Not A Moment, But A Movement, an initiative created to amplify, center, and celebrate Black voices.

The title refers to the 1879 Battle of Isandlwana, the first major encounter in the Anglo-Zulu war which ended with a decisive victory for the Zulus, and it was this search for himself in history that prompted Desire to contemplate the lives of the LGBT+ soldiers in the Zulu army.

The Lagos-born singer gives praise to Oluwa—meaning God—in his native tongue of Yoruba on this celebratory track. Its accompanying visual - directed by Chris Chuky - was captured inside a church in London adorned with grandiose architecture, colorfully painted frescoes and stained glass windows. This summer, the largest biennial Festival of Arab arts returns for its seventh edition, platforming and representing the rich cultures and artforms from Arab, South West Asian, and North African voices. 

The first single “Be Free” came accompanied by a powerful and visually-compelling video which explored queer love within the realms of South Africa’s hyper-masculine world of taxi gangs. It was followed by the delicate and brooding 8-minute epic featuring vocals from Zöe Modiga, “Rah”.

Along with the album announcement, he has shared the first single and its striking accompanying video, “Be Free”. On “Be Free” Desire Marea subtly judges a former lover on his inability to accept himself. The song journeys from tense percussive jazz to a gospel-esque swell of horns and synth, representative of the lovers’ stubbornness.

On the 2nd November, to celebrate its 120th anniversary, the Royal African Society is hosting a celebration of 'Creative Africa'. An evening of splendour starts at 7 pm and will be held at the Aqua Shard to honour African entertainment, film, fashion, food, and music on the continent, in the UK, and worldwide.

The Center for Ballet and the Arts at NYU (CBA), the first-ever international institute for scholars and artists of ballet and its related arts and sciences, today announces the launch of its Artistic Partnership Initiative (API). API is a joint initiative between The Center and major professional dance companies around the world to advance the art of choreography. The API Fellowship will give artists selected by the companies the full resources of The Center and NYU for a three to four-week residency to develop new work. Nominees are artists with notable choreographic potential.
