NCShakes to Hold ROMEO AND JULIET Education Workshop, 9/15

By:

Educators are invited to register for the North Carolina Shakespeare Festival's Hands On Shakespeare: Exploring Romeo and Juliet workshop, taking place on Saturday, Sept. 15, from 11:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. at the Spirit Center (807 W. Ward Ave., High Point).

Hands On Shakespeare teacher workshops are designed to help educators continue to develop their skills in teaching Shakespeare by getting up close and personal with his works. In a relaxed, collaborative environment, educators will become more comfortable with Shakespeare as performance. Participants will develop a deeper understanding of Shakespeare's language and learn practical ideas to reach every student in the classroom.

This workshop concentrates on scenes and soliloquies from Romeo and Juliet. Registration includes all materials, snacks, lunch, dinner and attendance at NCShakes' MainStage production of Romeo and Juliet at the High Point Theatre.

All participants will receive one CEU credit (10 contact hours). The cost of the workshop is $110.

The workshop's instructors will be Michael Huie, director of NCShakes Outreach and Education programs, and UNC Greensboro professor John Gulley.

Huie is an actor and teacher. Most recently he was seen as Scrooge in NCShakes' 2011 production of A Christmas Carol as well as The Foreigner and The Exact Center of the Universe with Festival Stage of Winston-Salem. Currently, he is an adjunct professor in the theatre department at High Point University.

Gulley teaches acting and directing at UNC Greensboro, where he has most recently directed The Seagull, Big River, Macbeth and Urinetown. As a freelance professional director, Gulley has directed off-Broadway and for a number of regional professional theatres. Professional credits include The Two Gentlemen of Verona at NCShakes; the world premiere of Trophies at the Cherry Lane Theatre in New York City; and The Trip to Bountiful, starring Ellen Burstyn, at TheatreFest in Montclair, N.J. From 1983-91, he was the resident director for the Asolo Theatre Company in Sarasota, Fla., where he directed over 30 productions and taught at the FSU/Asolo Conservatory for Professional Actor Training. Gulley is a graduate of Wake Forest University and the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

To register, contact the NCShakes administrative offices at 336-841-2273, email info@ncshakes.org or visit www.ncshakes.org.
