HAIRSPRAY, VENUS IN FUR & More Set for RLT's 2014-15 Season

Raleigh Little Theatre (RLT) has announced the theme of its 2014-15 season. "A Season of Love," approaches the topic of love from a variety of angles. Whether it's love of one's family and a teenage romance in Hairspray, the love between a child and a toy in The Velveteen Rabbit, or a historical novel colliding with a modern tale in Venus In Fur, the theme offers many compelling iterations for audiences of all ages. RLT also plans to name a new artistic director this spring, the culmination of a nation-wide search near completion. In February 2015, the artistic director will play an integral part in the a comedy in the Sutton Series, plays that focus on classic titles for general audiences.

The Sutton Series begins in August with Hairspray in the Sutton Theatre, directed by LD Burris. Mr. Burris previously directed Once on This Island in June 2013, and was a longtime member of Chuck Davis' African American Dance Ensemble. David Henderson will direct Eugene O'Neill's Desire Under The Elms in October 2014. The Sutton Series will conclude with a comedy to be determined by RLT's new artistic director.

For adult audiences, RLT's co-production with Actors Comedy Lab of Venus In Fur, by David Ives, leads off the City Series in January. This is the first local production of a play that premiered on Broadway in 2011 and was nominated for Best Play in 2012. C. Glen Matthews returns to direct Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson in May 2015, concluding the City Series. This musical reimagines Andrew Jackson as a modern day rock star. Mr. Matthews last directed Spring Awakening in October, 2013 to rave reviews.

For the family audience, Linda O'Day Young directs Mirandy and Brother Wind in November, a musical based on an award-winning book about a young girl who attempts to capture Brother Wind in order to win a cake walk in South Carolina in 1906. The series is rounded out by Kathleen Rudolph's production of The Velveteen Rabbit in March and Young's Sleeping Beauty in the Sutton Theatre in April, 2015.

Three additional shows are now available to season ticket buyers - Cinderella, directed once again by Rod and Nancy Rich, the Teens on Stage production of Fiddler On The Roof and Bare Theatre's production of Macbeth, directed by Rebecca Blum in the Stephenson Amphitheatre.
