About For Colored Girls…

The piece, first performed in 1975, is a choreopoem, or a series of 20 separate poems choreographed to music, that weavesinterconnected stories of love, empowerment, struggle and loss into a beautifully complex and truthful representation of sisterhood. The cast consists of seven nameless African-American women only identified by the colors they wear. Subjects from rape, abandonment, abortion, HIV/AIDS and domestic violence are tackled with unabashed, unapologetic and brutal honesty.
