Bare Theatre to Present LOVE LETTERS, 2/12-28

By:

Bare Theatre presents A. R. Gurney's Love Letters, the company's first production at Sonorous Road Productions in Raleigh, running February 12 - 28, 2016.

Love Letters is the story of Melissa and Andrew, childhood friends who grow up and go off to college, war, and their careers. They remain in touch via handwritten letters, and even kindle a romance which becomes a complex relationship. Director Rebecca Blum brings a new dimension to this work that has never been seen before. She has cast three actors each for the roles of Melissa and Andrew so the audience will physically see the passage of time as older actors step into the roles. The play is told entirely in correspondence, over the course of about 50 years.

The 1988 script was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. It has been a hit on Broadway and has featured countless well-known Hollywood actors including Kathleen Turner, William Hurt, Lynn Redgrave, Christopher Reeve, Stockard Channing, Christopher Walken, Carol Burnett, Brian Dennehy, Sissy Spacek, Mel Gibson, Elizabeth Taylor and James Earl Jones.

This approach to casting Love Letters has never been done before, and Bare Theatre obtained special permission from the playwright himself in order to produce it this way.

Tickets and rewards including boxes of chocolates and roses can be obtained by contributing via Kickstarter.

Bare Theatre, a Raleigh-based mobile theatre company, strives to connect with audiences by taking new approaches to time-honored works. The company recently received recognition in The News & Observer's year-end honors, specifically for the work of Associate Director Rebecca Blum. Bare Theatre takes its name from the minimalist staging but high-energy, physical approach to the works of Shakespeare and historical texts.
