Bare Theatre and Raleigh Little Theatre continue what has now become a tradition of performing summer Shakespeare in Stephenson Amphitheatre by the Raleigh Rose Garden. The two companies will proudly close out this year's Wherefore: Shakespeare in Raleigh series with Henry VI, July 29 - August 7, 2016.

This production condenses the three plays that make up Shakespeare's history into one 90-minute story that focuses exclusively on the famous "War of the Roses." This conflict, a progression of dynastic wars, ultimately united the British houses of Lancaster and York under the house of Tudor, which would reign through Queen Elizabeth I and the time of Shakespeare.

Under the direction of Lucinda Danner Gainey, Bare Theatre sets the scene in a post-apocalyptic dystopia, where loyalty is questioned, allegiances are tested, and all The Players have much to gain - and everything to lose. Cast members will have a hand in designing and building their own-costumes to create the DIY look of a shattered society, and a team of fight choreographers is being assembled to tackle the many battles that erupt throughout the story.

Bare Theatre, a Raleigh-based mobile theatre company, strives to connect with audiences by taking new approaches to time-honored works. The company recently received six nominations for the Triangle Independent & Community Theatre Awards, including Outstanding Drama (Titus Andronicus), Outstanding Lead Actress (Titus Andronicus), Outstanding Innovative Idea (Titus Andronicus and Macbeth), Outstanding Marketing, and Outstanding Collaboration (Macbeth with Raleigh Little Theatre). Bare Theatre takes its name from the minimalist staging but high-energy, physical approach to the works of Shakespeare and historical texts.

Founded in 1936, Raleigh Little Theatre (RLT) is one of the oldest continuously operating community theatres in the United States. RLT offers entertainment, education, and community programs year-round, reaching 40,000 people. As a community theatre, RLT engages hundreds of volunteers, under the guidance of professional staff, to achieve its mission and to bring quality Live Theatre to the Triangle area.
