AVENUE Q, MOTHERS & SONS and More Set for RLT's 2016-17 Season
"This season is full of opportunities to discover more about who we are. We invite audiences to share in these stories that include characters ranging from a pioneering radio DJ, to a young girl who will do anything to fly, to a puppet looking for his place in the world," says Patrick Torres, Artistic Director.
The Sutton Series of classic theatre includes the first local production of Memphis, the Broadway musical loosely based on the story of radio DJ Dewey Phillips. The series continues with One Man, Two Guvnors (February 2017) and A Piece of My Heart (May 2017). Performed over Memorial Day Weekend, A Piece of My Heart will be accompanied by additional programs for veterans and active duty military personnel, in continuation of RLT's commitment to servicemen and women throughout its 80 year history.
The City Series of contemporary theater begins in October with the first local production of Terrence McNally's Mothers and Sons. In January 2017, the series continues with The Whipping Man, and it closes in June 2017 with Avenue Q.
To more accurately describe the audience of the series, RLT's Youth Series will now be known as the Family Series. It begins in November with A Charlie Brown Christmas paired with Jingle Bell Jukebox. The former is a new adaptation of the TV holiday special by Eric Schaeffer, and the latter is a holiday jukebox musical by local theater artists Andy Beck and Brian Fisher. The series continues with the local premiere of When She Had Wings, a modern fable about a young girl who dreams of flying (March 2017) and closes with James and the Giant Peach (April 2017).
The Teens on Stage/Teens Backstage Summer Conservatory will present Bat Boy: The Musical from July 15 - 24, 2016. Cinderella returns in December 2016 directed by Rod and Nancy Rich.
The summer, movie-series lineup will expand from four to six movies and begins on July 10.
