North Carolina Symphony’s 'Fables for Families' Set for 6/16

By:

The North Carolina Symphony welcomes all princesses and heroes, witches and wizards, fairy tale champions and fable-inspired villains to Cary's Booth Amphitheatre for "Fables for Families." This fun and festive concert, led by Resident Conductor William Henry Curry and featuring North Carolina storyteller Heather Patterson King, takes place on Saturday, June 16 at 7:30 p.m. Children 12 and under are admitted free for lawn seating.

Maestro Curry leads the orchestra in a program of musical enchantments. Opening with the Witch's Ride from composer Engelbert Humperdinck's opera Hansel and Gretel, the concert takes families through the magical worlds of Harry Potter, Stravinsky's Firebird, Carl Nielsen's take on Aladdin and more. Headlining the evening is Sergei Prokofiev's timeless musical fable Peter and the Wolf, as read by Triangle-area favorite Heather Patterson King.

Yet, at this Symphony concert, the music is only part of the fun. The Symphony's popular costume contest returns as the orchestra invites all audience members to arrive in their best fable- or fairy tale-inspired wear. Multiple prizes for the most imaginative costumes will be awarded to both children and adults during intermission.

Forgot your costume? You can still take part. Booth Amphitheatre will feature numerous activities for concertgoers of all ages, including the Symphony's popular instrument zoo, a magic fountain of bubbles and face painting from Face Savvy. Stop by the Hansel and Gretel candy station (enjoy at your own risk), while Marbles Kids Museum and Durham's Museum of Life and Science will provide on-site activities before the concert and during intermission.

Additionally, families who display the biggest and boldest culinary skills can win prizes. The Whole Foods Market of Cary Picnic of the Week contest selects the weekend's best picnickers to receive a $100 gift basket from Whole Foods. Two honorable mention $20 gift cards will also be awarded. Become a fan of the North Carolina Symphony on Facebook to see photos of the winners after each Rex Healthcare Summerfest Series concert.
