In 1978 Juraj Herz shot two remarkable films with fairy-tale motifs: The Beauty and the Beast and The Ninth Heart. The latter is noted for its impressively surreal atmosphere, the moving main theme of pure love with a magic power, the dreadful world of the Undead ruled by Count Aldobrandini from his hall of time on the one hand and the playful and colourful world of comedians on the other. The wandering student Martin comes to the royal seat and is told in a pub of the strange illness of Princess Adriana. So as to avoid being imprisoned for not paying his bill, he enrols as the ninth volunteer – Adriana’s guard. At that moment, he has no inkling that the Princess is under the control of the evil astrologer, who keeps himself alive by drinking the elixir made of the blood of nine human hearts... A fairy tale for the whole family.
