Miracle Theater Group Presents DUENDE DE LORCA, 1/13-22
Federico García Lorca is celebrated the world over for his poetry, music and plays. Yet at the age of 27, he was still a struggling artist living with his parents, staging puppet plays that were laughed off the stage by the critics. His need for freedom fueled his desire to succeed. In search of duende, his travels through New York and Cuba became a quest for cultural integration and gender acceptance. In the Americas, Lorca shined like a mad and fiery diamond, fusing his cante jondo with Afro-Cuban son to create a new rhythm of powerfully poetic drama.
Duende de Lorca follows the early years of Federico's early successes from the opening night of Mariana Pineda, followed by the printing of Gypsy Ballads and Poet in New York. Audiences will share in his triumphs and failures and his relationships with Salvador Dali, Melchor Almagro, Emilio Aladren and others as his journey from Spain to New York and Cuba shapes his life and his art.

ABOUT THE BILINGUAL BOOK BAZAAR - Sponsored by Powell's Books
Following the matinee on Saturday, Jan. 22, Teatro Milagro is pleased to partner with Powell's Books to present a "Bilingual Book Bazaar" in the theatre's lobby and future zócalo space next door. On hand will be representatives from various organizations, such as the Independent Publishing Resource Center, who will offer demonstrations and exhibits related to "zine"-making and bookbinding. Attendees are also invited to share in poetry readings while browsing a unique selection of English and Spanish literature available for purchase from Powell's. Teatro Milagro's Bilingual Book Bazaar is free and open to the public.
ABOUT THE DIRECTOR
Matthew B. Zrebski, Director, is a multi-award winning playwright, composer, script consultant, and producer-director. He has served as the Artistic Director for Theatre Atlantis, and Stark Raving Theatre. He has mounted over 40 world premieres, and had many of his own plays produced, including the planet ME, Neck, A Place Called Timothy, Parts, After The Zipper, Darkstep and Dawning, The Vespiary, Ablaze, Hunter in the Corner, The Aquavarian, Handprint Alley, and Rubber 'n' Glue. He was recently awarded commissions from Oregon Children's Theatre to pen both Texting the Sun and 1 1/2. Matthew teaches playwriting through the Literary Arts WITS program and for Visions and Voices at Portland Center Stage.
