The Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh opens its season with a program featuring composers from three different centuries responding to violence. The program includes Arvo Pärt's Da pacem Domine, Florence Price's 1939 setting of Vachel Lindsay's poem Abraham Lincoln Walks at Midnight, and Franz Joseph Haydn's Mass in Time of War, written in 1796 as Austria struggled against advancing French armies. The program begins and ends with a prayer for peace, exploring the hope that shared experience and mutual understanding can help put an end to violence.
