Les Miserables Shatters Records and Becomes Highest Attended Show in Phoenix Theatre's History

By:

Les Miserables, the modern musical masterpiece based on Victor Hugo's epic novel, has exceeded all financial and creative expectations set by Phoenix Theatre management and local critics. It has grossed more than $500,000 in ticket sales, providing jobs for the more than 100 people. It is also the highest attended show in the theatre's history.

"Les Miserables has turned into a phenomenon for Phoenix Theatre," Dan Schay, the theatre's managing director said. "It is a financial and an artistic stimulus package. We are employing more than 100 actors, technicians, crew members and musicians - a record payroll for the theatre. We are also attracting record audiences, who generate economic activity at the theatre and beyond," he concluded.

"It is the best local production I've seen in my 30 years in this community," Chris Curcio, arts reviewer for the Arizona Republic and KJZZ stated in his review. "It is still grandly scaled, with a huge cast that creates a wonderfully robust musical sound."

Some were skeptical of the smaller venue, suggesting that the emotion and grandeur of the Broadway version would be lost. According to KEZ reviewer, David Appleford, "The first thing you're struck by when entering the auditorium is how surprisingly large the setting on stage appears to be. Waiting for the show to begin is like sitting in a movie theatre staring at a widescreen edition of an oncoming epic about to be presented in 3D."

"The audience and reviewer response has been overwhelming," said Brian Kunnari, Marketing Director. "It was Michael Barnard's dream to bring this show to our stage. The entire staff is very proud of the final product and thankful to Michael's leadership that delivered this incredible theatrical experience to our stage."

The initial run, which opened February 18, 2009, is sold out but an extension from March 25 - 29 has been announced and tickets are available.
