Walnut Street Theatre has released first look footage of 1776, Sherman Edwards and Peter Stone's classic award-winning Broadway musical, now playing through May 31, 2026 as part of Philadelphia's celebration commemorating the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
Directed and choreographed by Glenn Casale with music and vocal direction by Chris Burcheri, the production follows John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, and Thomas Jefferson as they fight for independence against a deadlocked Continental Congress in a retelling filled with humor, romance, pathos, and nail-biting tension.
Ben Dibble leads the cast as John Adams, joined by Scott Greer as Benjamin Franklin, Grant Struble as Thomas Jefferson, Kathryn Brunner as Martha Jefferson, Lucy Horton as Abigail Adams, Danny Vaccaro as John Hancock, Scott Langdon as John Dickinson, Jeffrey Coon as Richard Henry Lee, Ben Michael as Edward Rutledge, and David Bardeen as James Wilson, among a large ensemble cast.
The creative team includes Roman Tatarowicz (set design), Mary Folino (costumes), Ryan O'Gara (lighting), Ed Chapman (sound), and Carissa Thorlakson (wig and makeup design).
1776 runs 2 hours and 35 minutes. Special performances include ASL on May 7, audio description on May 7, and an open-captioned performance on April 26.
