STAGE TUBE: Rachel York Leads Walnut Street Theatre's THE KING AND I at the Thanksgiving Day Parade!

By:

THE KING AND I has captured the hearts of millions with its charming story of the British governess brought into the court of Siam to tutor the King's many children. Once within the splendor of the Royal Palace, Anna and the King grow to understand one another and learn about each other's cultures. This unique love story is told with a glorious score, including "Getting to Know You," "I Whistle a Happy Tune," "Hello Young Lovers" and the unforgettable "Shall We Dance."

THE KING AND I originally opened on Broadway in 1951 and ran for 1,246 performances. The production won five Tony Awards including Best Musical, Best Actor (Yul Brynner) and Best Actress (Gertrude Lawrence). The musical was made into a popular film in 1956, for which Yul Brynner won an Oscar for Best Actor. Based on the book Anna and the King of Siam by Magaret Landon, THE KING AND I was derived from the memoirs of Anna Leonowens, who became school teacher to the children of King Mongkut of Siam in the early 1860s. The production also contains the ballet Small House of Uncle Thomas, based upon Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin.

THE KING AND I runs at through January 8. This production is sponsored by Citizens Bank. Media Sponsors are B101 and NBC 10. For tickets and information, call 215-574-3550 or 800-982-2787. Tickets are also available online 24/7 by visiting www.WalnutStreetTheatre.org or Ticketmaster. Get a look at the production, performing in Philly's Thanksgiving Day Parade, below!
