Austin Pendleton and Barbara Bleier return to downtown's hideaway, Pangea, in December, with their third annual holiday show, this one asking, What's In Your Stocking???
Let's cut to the chase. The Prom is a great musical comedy on the same level as HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS WITHOUT REALLY TRYING, A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM and THE PRODUCERS. Brooks Ashmanskas, the flamboyantly-styled song and dance man with a razor-sharp comic flair who has spent over twenty years on Broadway stealing scenes in supporting roles, is now giving a great musical comedy star performance that should rank up there with the classic turns given by Robert Morse, Zero Mostel and Nathan Lane in those smash hits.
Jewish oppression, immigrant families struggling to keep together, and an exodus of foreigners fleeing to America for a better life. Topics ripped from headlines of CNN are also the basis for the classic 1964 musical comedy FIDDLER ON THE ROOF. The record breaking musical is as relevant today as ever, and the National Tour settled into Shea's Buffalo Theatre last night after it's launch in Syracuse, NY two weeks ago.
Broadway concert series, hosted by Seth Rudetsky, will return to San Francisco. Kicking off the series will be Ramin Karimloo followed by Audra McDonald.
The internationally acclaimed Broadway @ concert series hosted and music directed by Sirius XM Radio Star Seth Rudetsky is finally landing smack dab in the middle of Broadway itself this fall.
Austin Pendleton and Barbara Bleier are returning to PANGEA, New York's downtown supper club, with a reprise of their show, STARTING HERE- The Songs of Richard Maltby and David Shire. There are two performances scheduled: October 2nd and 9th. Pendleton has been friends with Maltby and Shire since they were all undergraduates at Yale in the 1960s, and had appeared in several of their student productions. The composers have been generous enough to offer some of their unpublished works from earlier and later dates to the duo, and Pendleton and Bleier are thrilled to be performing their work. Paul Greenwood is the Musical Director, and Barbara Maier Gustern directs.
Great theater requires a willing suspension of disbelief. 'The Producers' by Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan requires a willing embrace of 1940's Catskill schlock and shtick. That said, MTH's 'The Producers' is so much inspired silliness, so well performed, and so meticulously put together, it is tough to stop giggling and smirking and groaning at the awful, hysterical, politically in-correct, funny, one-liners. The Saturday night, Crown Center audience for 'The Producers' thoroughly embarrassed itself and was delighted to do so.
It is almost fifty years since the original Mel Brooks film and seventeen since the Broadway stage version of Mel Brook's hilarious and outrageously funny, totally incorrect musical, The Producers, hit the stage. And despite it, or perhaps because of the contentious climate in which we live, this glorious tonic of laughter and colorful characters still rings true and commands a wrapt audience. Biddeford city Theater's production, directed by Linda Sturdivant, provides a glorious afternoon escape into the world of parody, spoof, and Broadway innuendo.
The production is a large one for this ambitious community theatre, and they rise admirably to the challenge. Sturdivant directs and produces with a sure hand and a very balanced sense of humor - Mel Brooks requires a deft touch, despite the overt quality of his comedy. She expertly captures the iconic moments, keeps the stage pace, moves the action, and helps the cast establish the colorful characters.
