Review: ANTIGONE, Regent's Park Open Air Theatre

Nigerian born writer, Inua Ellams, originally turned down working on Antigone due to feeling “no distant kinship with the protagonist.” Five years of work later, how could Ellams have predicted that his modern adaptation would feel so responsive to the current socio-political climate.

As part of their new Recovery Season, the Orange Tree Theatre, in a co-production with Actors Touring Company now brings us Rice, a powerful, thought-provoking and funny play about cultural identity, class, race and power told through two very different women, who form an unlikely friendship. Set in Australia, Nisha is a young Indian-Australian and an ambitious executive on the cusp of securing a life-changing deal to sell rice to India. Yvette is an older Chinese-Australian who cleans Nisha’s office while she juggles with trying to revive a failing business and a daughter in trouble for environmental activism.

Following on from the Orange Tree’s successful debut into the world of theatrical streaming with Inside, comes Outside: a premiere of three plays from new and established artists. The concept of inside and outside has been questioned by everyone over the last year. For many, being outside represents freedom, space and air. For others, it represents uncertainty and a sense of not belonging.
