Of the few songwriting teams known as one word we have Rodgers & Hart, Rodgers & Hammerstein, Kander & Ebb and...Lerner & Loewe.
These two men created many of America's most well-known musical theater scores. They weren't nearly as prolific as those others mentioned, but in listing their works together, there's not one clinker among them. Their first hit was Brigadoon in 1947, then came Paint Your Wagon in 1951, My Fair Lady in 1956, the film Gigi for MGM in 1958 and finally Camelot in 1960.
Classical composers like Victor Herbert, Jacques Offenbach, and Johann Strauss, along with 20th century lyricists Jerry Bock and George Gershwin, and the Victorian-era team of W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan will be featured when Ohio Light Opera opens its 31st season at The College of Wooster in June.
Susanna Foster, who starred opposite Claude Rains as 'Christine' in the 1943 version of 'Phantom of the Opera,' has passed away. She was 84. Foster died Saturday at the Lillian Booth Actors Home in Englewood, N.J., publicist Dale Olson said. Foster made only a dozen movies but she was extremely popular in the early 1940s. A child prodigy, she got a contract with MGM at age 12 on the strength of her singing, then moved to Paramount, where at the age of 14 she made her movie debut in 1939's 'The Great Victor Herbert.'
She moved to Universal, where she was 19 when she played the leading lady in 'Phantom' but she abruptly quit the film business in 1945 and a few years later married baritone Wilbur Evans. They divorced in 1956.
