In 1900 the theatrical success of David Belasco's play “Madame Butterfly: A Tragedy of Japan” led to Giacomo Puccini's 1904 grand opera “Madama Butterfly,” which re-emerged in 1988 as David Henry Hwang's Broadway hit and Tony Award winning play “M. Butterfly. “ When Jonathan Larson's musical “Rent” opened in 1996 to rave reviews, audiences and critics loved the homage to Puccini's “La Boehme.”
