Censored in the late 18th Century by the Catholic Church, Astucias por heredar un sobrino a un tio (Tricks to Inherit: A Nephew from his Uncle) was the first play ever performed by Hispanic settlers in Central California where the original manuscript was preserved in the Santa Cruz/Monterey area. The original is now in the Bancroft Library at the University of Berkeley and the critical annotated edition by Dr. Pedro Garcia-Caro of the University of Oregon was published in 2016 by Arte Publico Press (Houston.) This will be the play's first production in over 200 years, presented in masterful commedia dell'arte style by director Robi Arce and a superb cast in the original Spanish verse with English supertitles.
