Review: THE ISLAND at Ensemble

What did our critic think of THE ISLAND at Ensemble? Native South Euclid resident and Brush High School grad, Dr. Alan Wieder, is on a quest “to stem the tide of forgetfulness.”  The oral historian, who has been on the faculties of both South Africa’s University of Western Cape and Stellenbosch University, is concerned that “few young South Africans know of the contributions or the sensibilities regarding the social justice and the revolution against class disparity and racism in the world.”

Review Roundup: Jeanine Tesori's GROUNDED at the Washington National Opera

Washington National Opera opened its 2023–2024 season with the world premiere of Grounded. Composed by two-time Tony Award® winner Jeanine Tesori with a libretto adapted by George Brant from his eponymous play, and directed by Tony Award® winner Michael Mayer, Grounded is commissioned by the Metropolitan Opera and co-produced with the Washington National Opera.

Review: COWBOIS, Swan Theatre, Stratford-Upon-Avon

Cowbois might sound like a reboot of Sister Act but there is far more going under the satin bonnets. Gunslinger Jack Cannon (Vinnie Heaven) arrives in a small Wild West-era outpost, handsome by appearance, fearsome by reputation and with a bounty of 200 dollars on their head. The town is populated only by women and a drunken sheriff (Paul Hunter), their menfolk having been gone for over a year and presumed dead after a mine blast.

Review: THE WIZ at National Theatre

In 1975 a revolutionary approach to L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz opened on Broadway at the Majestic Theatre. The Wiz was a musical that no one thought would get past its opening night. The show proved everyone wrong. It won eight Tony Awards including Best Musical and ran for 1,672 performances. The all-African American version of Dorothy’s trip down the yellow brick road is now embarking on a thirteen-city pre- Broadway tour and is playing at the National Theatre here in DC through October 29th. I am sorry to say that this version is a rocky journey over a cool “Ease on Down the Road”.

Interview: Writer/Director/Musician David P. Johnson on Creating Sally Spectre: The Musical at Theatre West

Each Halloween Season, many horror and science fiction offerings hit our stages. This year, David P. Johnson is bringing his Sally Spectre: The Musical back to Theatre West weekends through October 29. A combination horror and morality play, it centers around the ghost of a 5-year-old girl trying to escape from her locked bedroom where she was brutally murdered. But is this musical really for children? To find out, I decided to speak with David P. Johnson who not only wrote the book, music, and lyrics but also directs and co-produces it, and appears onstage accompanying the cast on keyboard during every performance.

Review: TERAPIA (THERAPY) at Teatro ECAS

Teatro ECAS (Education Center of Arts and Science) kicks off its 26th season with Martín Giner’s play, ‘Terapia’ (Therapy), an intriguing, highly entertaining dramatic comedy that invites the audience to be a fly on the wall during a series of sessions between a psychiatrist and his most challenging patient.

Review: Musical Theatre West's Heartwarming THE SOUND OF MUSIC Blesses Long Beach

MTW's pleasantly perky, traditionally-executed production comes across as a show that's very eager to please, armed with a keen, fine-tuned goal of making sure both fans and newbies to this beloved Rodgers and Hammerstein classic are left feeling uplifted and happy. The show continues through November 5 at the Carpenter Center in Long Beach.

Review: AMADEUS LIVE, Royal Albert Hall

“There are simply too many notes, that's all. Just cut a few and it will be perfect.” Peter Shaffer’s irreverent, yet at times poignant and thought-provoking, take on the relationship between Mozart and Salieri began life as a National Theatre production – its big screen adaptation garnered accolades following its 1984 release, and retains its popularity almost 40 years later.

What did our critic think of PIPELINE at Omaha Community Playhouse?
