BWW Review: A Sure-Footed BRIGHTON BEACH MEMOIRS at Vagabond Players Photo BWW Review: A Sure-Footed BRIGHTON BEACH MEMOIRS at Vagabond Players
by Jack L. B. Gohn - Jan 18, 2020

Neil Simon's indecision about genre in Brighton Beach Memoirs was related to his problem being direct about his parents. A true account would necessarily have revealed their fighting, his father's desertions and infidelities, and the eventual failure of their marriage, and could only have been presented as a tragedy or melodrama. A comedy (and Brighton Beach is formally a comedy) would need to present a sanitized version of what Simon remembered; it would satisfy his audience (which expected comedies) and his parents, but it would also come further from the flavor Simon wanted to present. What we get in consequence is a play in three somewhat inconsistent genres.

BWW Review: Rumor Has It that RUMORS at Just Off Broadway is a Delightfully Funny Pro Photo BWW Review: Rumor Has It that RUMORS at Just Off Broadway is a Delightfully Funny Production
by Kristen Price - May 11, 2019

Just Off Broadway's (JOB) delightful production of Neil Simon's RUMORS includes exactly what we all need right now - an evening full of plenty of laughs. From the setup to the final pay off, this cast brings the chuckles (and a few guffaws) to a decades old script, that still holds up today. The story begins, how every great story should, with a party. In this instance, it's in a fancy house in New York, circa 1990. However, from the start, things seem a little off. The man of the house, may have tried to end his life, and the woman of the house is missing. Also, all of their closest friends are gathered for their anniversary party. From then on, things go spectacularly awry. Basically, it has all the makings of a fabulous farce.

Our ten minute play festival has sold out so many times over the last two years we had to move it to our downstairs stage! 10x10x10 is fast becoming a staple in the Baltimore theater community, and we could not be prouder to give these new plays a home.

BWW Review: Pennybags and Henny Penny: Financially Farcical CRASH AND BURN at Theatrical Mining Company
by Jack L. B. Gohn - Aug 1, 2016

Such dramatic suspense as exists in Crash and Burn hangs on the question whether it is possible Financier Milty has outsmarted himself (perhaps out-stupided himself might be a better phrase) by retaining two such paragons of dimness, greed, and vanity as Lawyers Crash and Burn to represent him: Might they fail at failure?
