CRAZY RICH ASIANS Stars Discuss Film at TimesTalk This Afternoon

TimesTalks, The New York Times live conversation and performance series, is proud to present a pre-release screening of the eagerly awaited romantic comedy “Crazy Rich Asians,” based on the best-selling novel by Kevin Kwan. Following the screening, co-stars Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Awkwafina, Michelle Yeoh and author Kevin Kwan will join veteran New York Times contributor Logan Hill for an entertaining conversation about this Hollywood movie that puts an Asian storyline front and center, and about how audiences around the world can relate. This TimesTalks will take place on August 14 at The Times Center.

Max Crumm Stars In New Off-Broadway Musical THE EVOLUTION OF MANN

Nancy Manocherian's the cell (Artistic Director, Kira Simring), who scored a hit last season with the World Premiere musical Bastard Jones, will present the New York Premiere of THE EVOLUTION OF MANN, a musical featuring music & lyrics by Drama Desk nominee Douglas J. Cohen (Children's Letters to God, The Opposite of Sex) and book & lyrics by Dan Elish (13: The Musical) based on his novel, Nine Wives. Directed by Joe Barros (Bastard Jones), the production will star Max Crumm (Grease, Disaster!) in the title role. Previews begin September 23 at the cell with opening slated for Thursday, October 4.

The show features Aaron Alcaraz, Nicholas Barasch, Alana Cauthen, Grace Choi, Karl Josef Co, CJ Eldred, MaryJoanna Grisso, Cory Jeacoma, Noah Plomgren, and Brynn Williams. 'Broadway Celebrates New Musical Theatre' will bring to light the importance of new musical theatre writing and provide a platform for hopeful writers to work with a group of professionals to showcase their work in front of a larger audience.

Duo Noire Releases Night Triptych, An Album Of World Premieres For Guitar Duo By Women Composers, On New Focus

On Friday, June 22, 2018, American classical guitar duo, Duo Noire (Thomas Flippin and Christopher Mallett), releases Night Triptych, an album of world premiere recordings of newly commissioned works by six highly accomplished and diverse women composers from around the world, on New Focus Recordings. Produced with GRAMMY-winning guitarist William Coulter, the album features Clarice Assad'sHocus Pocus, Courtney Bryan's Soli Deo Gloria, Golfam Khayam's Night Triptych, Mary Kouyoumdjian's Byblos, Gity Razaz's Four Haikus, and Gabriella Smith's Loop the Fractal Hold of Rain, all composed for Duo Noire. The album is the culmination of a project Duo Noire, the first two African-American guitar graduates of the Yale School of Music, launched in 2015 to make classical music more gender inclusive, and was supported with a grant from the Diller-Quaile School of Music.

FEINSTEIN'S/54 BELOW, Broadway's Supper Club, presented the 30th Anniversary of No Way to Treat a Lady. A laugh-filled evening featuring songs from the Richard Rodgers Award winning musical by Douglas J. Cohen, based on the novel by William Goldman (The Princess Bride). MAC Award winner KLea Blackhurst (Hello, Dolly!, Goodspeed) and author Cohen co-host the event which will feature many of the performers from past productions, both off-Broadway at the York Theatre and Hudson Guild, and regionally (Florida Studio Theatre, Village Theater, Barrington Stage, TheaterWorks in Hartford, Coconut Grove in Florida, Colony Theater in L.A.), as well as photographs and footage from over a dozen international productions. Cohen will also reveal some of the show's unique history behind the scenes.

New York Youth Symphony Launches Fellowship Program

New York Youth Symphony (NYYS), under the guidance of a new three-year strategic plan, is launching a new fellowship program to identify, train, and mentor students from underrepresented communities who wish to prepare for and attend college. Students in their sophomore and junior years of high school accepted into the NYYS orchestra, chamber music, jazz, conducting, and composition programs are eligible to apply for the fellowships which will last one or two years. Awarded fellows will participate in the NYYS program of their choice, including performances, rehearsals, sectionals, master classes and workshops, and receive a $5,000 stipend to offset costs of NYYS fees, private lessons, travel, and instrument maintenance.

It is not a faithful retelling of that work, but rather presented as a play within a play as we see Cervantes himself and his fellow prisoners performing his story as they await trial by the Spanish Inquisition.
