The Cherry Lane Theatre will present the 11th season of its Obie Award-winning Cherry Lane Mentor Project with the new play HOUSEBREAKING - written by Jakob Holder, mentored by playwright Charles Mee - with performances set to run March 24-April 4 at The Cherry Lane Studio (38 Commerce Street) in Manhattan. Playwrights Horizons (Tim Sanford, Artistic Director; Leslie Marcus, Managing Director) begins 2009 with the New York premiere of THE SAVANNAH DISPUTATION, a new play by Evan Smith (Psych and The Uneasy Chair at Playwrights Horizons, Remedial English for the Young Playwrights Festival at Playwrights Horizons, Servicemen at The New Group). This will be Mr. Smith's fourth collaboration with the theater company.

The Humana Festival of New American Plays, Actors Theatre of Louisville's main venue for producing new work, is an annual event held in February and March.

The Cherry Lane Theatre presents the world premiere production of Deirdre O'Connor's JAILBAIT--a new play about two teenaged girls and the men they meet when they pose as college students during a night out at a club in Boston--as the inaugural production at Cherry Lane's newest Off-Broadway theatre, the 90-seat Cherry Pit (155 Bank Street), with previews set to begin March 19 prior to its official press opening on March 25. The Phoenix Theatre of Indianapolis will produce the Indiana premiere of Theresa Rebeck's mystery drama Mauritius in its Frank & Katrina Basile Theatre March 5 through April 4, 2009. Rebeck has had numerous productions of plays such as Spike Heels, Bad Dates, and The Family of Mann Off-Broadway, but Mauritius was her first play to be produced on Broadway (by Manhattan Theatre Club, in 2007.)

McCarter Theatre Center announces the complete cast of William Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, directed by Rebecca Taichman. A co-production with Washington, D.C.'s Shakespeare Theatre Company, Twelfth Night begins performances in the Matthews Theatre on Tuesday, March 10 and runs until March 29. (Press opening Friday, March 13). Shipwrecked in a foreign land without family, friends or possessions-what's a girl to do? Identity is under siege in the labyrinth of misconceptions that is Twelfth Night, Shakespeare's bewitching comedy of unquenchable desire, self-deception and misdirected love. This fantastical, timeless production-helmed by rising-star director Rebecca Taichman-is a real sensualist's delight: full of longing 'all as hungry as the sea' and awash in ethereal charm.

Intimate Apparel by Lynn Nottage Winner of five national awards for best play, including the New York Drama Critics Circle award, Intimate Apparel revolves around the character of Esther, an African-American seamstress living in New York at the beginning of the 20th century who creates beautiful lingerie for society women and prostitutes alike. She falls in love with a Panama Canal laborer who woos her through romantic letters, though she is also admired by the shy Jewish merchant who sells fabrics to her. Nottage, who based the play on the life of her great-grandmother, called it 'a lyrical meditation on one woman's loneliness and desire.' Directed by Molly Murphy, senior directing student in the Division of Theatre.

February 19 to March 7 are sure to be good dates at the Tom Hendry Theatre at the MTC Warehouse with Bad Dates, the hilariously sassy one-woman show by Theresa Rebeck. Starring Precious Chong, Bad Dates was the 2009 MTC Regional Tour, traveling to 21 communities throughout Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario. The story: Haley, single mother and waitress on the rise, has decided to dip her Jimmy Choos into the New York dating pool. Although she's optimistic by nature, Haley's faith in humanity is seriously challenged by a string of bad dates and a brush with the Romanian mafia. But then, if life always went smoothly, we wouldn't have any stories to tell, would we?

Rebeck has worked as a television writer and producer as well, giving her ample experience in plot twists that must be resolved in a short span of time. Rebeck was looking casually on the Internet one day ('Sometimes I avoid work by just typing things in and seeing what comes up') and discovered photos of rare stamps from a 19th century wealthy man's collection. They were to be auctioned off, and among them were two rare stamps from the tiny island of Mauritius. Rebeck delved deeper into philately - stamp collecting - and loved the idea of the frailty and great value of tiny pieces of paper. Out of her research came a play that explores how flaws, in stamps and in people, can lead to complex human dynamics.
