To kick off its 2012-2013 fall/winter season, The Joyce Theater will welcome back onto its stage some of the world's leading flamenco artists Soledad Barrio & Noche Flamenca, for an extended two-week engagement, tonight, September 18 - 30 with a program entitled Flores para los Muertos.
The Philadelphia Dance Company, affectionately known around the world as PHILADANCO returns to the Joyce Theater October 2-7, 2012, for its annual New York season with an exciting program of works that reflect both the versatility of the dancers and the company's longstanding commitment to working with choreographers in various stages of their careers. The New York 2012 season includes: the World premiere of "Moan" choreographed by Matthew Rushing; the New York premiere of Rennie Harris' "Wake Up"; Ronald K. Brown's "Gatekeepers" and the restaging of George Faison's iconic work "Suite Otis."
From September 20-30, 2012, Houston Ballet presents Women@Art featuring a world premiere by Aszure Barton, the company premiere of Twyla Tharp's The Brahms-Haydn Variations, and the return of Julia Adam's Ketubah, commissioned by Houston Ballet in 2004. Houston Ballet will give six performances of Women@Art at Wortham Theater Center at 510 Texas Avenue in downtown Houston. Fresh from its appearances at the Chicago Dancing Festival on August 25, Houston Ballet opens its 2012-13 season with artistic director Stanton Welch's signature work Madame Butterfly on a program with his one-act ballet Clear, set to music by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) , running tonight, September 6 - 16.
Ballet Next, the independent ballet company founded by acclaimed dancers Michele Wiles and Charles Askegard, will present its first week-long season at The Joyce Theater from October 23-28, 2012. Since debuting for a one-night only, sold out performance at The Joyce in 2011, Ballet Next has forged an exciting creative laboratory, bringing together world-class choreographers, dancers and musicians to develop contemporary work with the highest level of classical technique as its foundation. The highly-anticipated season includes two programs with five world premieres from Mauro Bigonzetti, Brian Reeder, Margo Sappington, Alison Cooke Beatty, and Charles Askegard, and features dancers from New York City Ballet, Stuttgart Ballet, Houston Ballet, and Pacific Northwest Ballet, as well as young talents who comprise the Ballet Next group of Soloists. The Ballet Next Ensemble will accompany the dancers with live music led by noted Israeli cellist Elad Kabilio.
