It's just about time to wish you all a happy 2018--but I'm not quite ready to put 2017 to rest. Though it won't go into the annals as one of the best years ever, there were quite enough performances and performers that made this year a winner for me, operatically speaking at least, in my corner of the world.

On January 16, 2018 at 7:00pm, join Harlem Stage -- the legendary uptown venue that for over 30 years has been promoting the creative legacy of Harlem and artists of color -- for a special winter benefit performance that will honor the life and work of Ella Fitzgerald. This intimate evening will feature jazz icon Dee Dee Bridgewater and singing sensation W McDonald, of The Voice fame, as they pay tribute to the legendary Ella Fitzgerald in honor of her centennial. In the spirit of the best traditions in jazz, both of these artists will perform their own inimitable interpretations of the songs made famous by Ella.

Catherine Cabeen/Hyphen presents the world premiere of Give Me More, a three-part work exploring the relationship between conditioning, consumption, and self-worth. The program features choreography by Catherine Cabeen, a cast of seven performers, and lighting design by Philip Trevino. Performances will take place Thursday Saturday, January 25 27, at 8pm, at Theater for the New City, 155 First Avenue, in Manhattan.

Four projects representing diverse world voices, each with bold and independent visions of how art can elevate the human experience, comprise this year's selected projects for the two-week Sundance Institute Theatre Lab at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA), convening December 3-17, 2017, with a public performance of another project slated for December 9. The Theatre Labs process is rigorous and generative. World-class rhythm and blues/ boogie-woogie pianist Jools Holland has become a British institution over the last 25 plus years, having achieved worldwide acclaim as host of the immensely popular Later....With Jools Holland on BBC Two Television since its debut in 1992. Holland will now perform live in New York City, his first U.S. performance in more than 15 years, at the legendary Blue Note.

Playwright/performer Karma Mayet shares stories of America's tortured relationship to race both personal and historical set within the frame of a game of Bid Whist with the audience. With a winning card guiding the choice of story, on any given night she may summon her own experiences moving from Chicago to an all-white town in Illinois, widening to passed-down tales of the Great Migration and the Pullman Porters, smack up against her own current experiences navigating New York microagressions. In this participatory piece, Mayet creates a wonderland of playful intellect, inhabited by humor that bites and characters that speak in twisted tongues. Race Card unpacks the musty traveling papers stuffed into the 21st century's history bags, and rifles through the audience's very own drawers as well, calling on them to join the fray of stage play with both cued and improvised live-ness at every turn.

The World Science Festival and Con Edison have announced that City of Science, a buzzing mini-metropolis of mind-expanding demonstrations and hands-on activities for families, will travel to each of New York City's five boroughs, beginning December 10, 10am-4pm, at the Park Slope Armory YMCA in Brooklyn (361 15th Street, between 7th and 8th Avenues).

'Stories by Hand,' Preeti Vasudevan's autobiographical solo that combines language, music and dance to tell its witty, poignant, and tragic stories, will receive its world premiere at New York Live Arts, November 2-4. Vasudevan's collaborators include Paul Kaiser (literary dramaturg), Robert Wiezel (lighting designer), and Paul Jacob (composer).

On Thursday, October 26, Meredith Monk, trailblazing composer, singer and interdisciplinary artist, was awarded the 24th annual Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize at a packed ceremony at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM).
