BWW Reviews: BAD JEWS Throw Haymakers
by Alan Katz
- Nov 13, 2014
As the show opens, Jonah is innocently trying to play video games to distract himself from the days events while Daphna harangues him into attentiveness to her complaints about Liam and the world, generally. Liam, who was not at the funeral (much to the aggravation of Daphna), is soon to arrive at the apartment and is bringing, unbeknownst to Jonah and Daphna, his very blonde and very goyische girlfriend, Melody. When they arrive, civility between Liam and Daphna is clearly moot, and Jonah and Melody are forced to play peacekeepers. From there, the situation devolves into one of the most vitriolic confrontation I've ever seen between two characters onstage.

It's the little things that keep you going during tech. Jordan Fife Hunt (Paul) just offered me some gingerbread pita chips. I'll take what I can get (namely, sugar). We're three and a half hours into our first 10 out of 12. Thus far, there have been no stressful outbursts, costume disasters, short fuses, or small animals harmed. I'm gunning for a drama free tech process. We did, however, get off to a soggy and cacophonous start.

BWW Reviews: American Ballet Theatre Presents New Ratmansky Ballet
by Barnett Serchuk
- Nov 12, 2013
First the good news. Alexei Ratmansky's Piano Concerto #1, set to the Shostakovich piece of the same name, is as bracing as ever. Now, the bad news. Ratmansky's The Tempest, set to a Sibelius score, is in a state of choreographic disorder. It sets out to tell a Shakespearean play in 45 minutes, and even with the input of dramaturg Mark Lamos, the ballet can't dance, let alone move.

There was some fantastic variety on show at Edinburgh. There were definite disappointments but also some really impressive and innovative attempts. Although it's always tough to pick just a few shows to mention - here are my awards for Edinburgh 2013:

Major airlines do a better job of satisfying their passengers for a second straight year, according to a report released today by the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI). Although customer satisfaction for airlines exceeds its best level in nearly two decades, air travel remains an uncomfortable and costly experience for most passengers. Despite gaining 3.0% to an ACSI benchmark of 69, airlines top only subscription TV service (68) and Internet service providers (65) in customer satisfaction.
