Broadway's 40 theatres aren't the only places to catch performances from your favorite stars! Well after Broadway orchestra's begin their overtures, ensemble members take their dance breaks, and performers belt out their eleven- o'clock numbers, the party continues at various cabaret venues throughout New York City. If you've been a regular reader of this particular reviewer's musings, you know that every year there are long stretches of time where I just haven't been able to critique all the shows I've seen that deserve commentary. So I end up playing what they call in sports, 'Catch-up ball,' and post a mash up of belated reviews from past shows. It's kind of like a critic's version of the song 'Six Months Out of Every Year,' from Damn Yankees. Give or take a month or two, that's usually the time period during which I store unpublished reviews in my fevered brain and then unload them all in one seemingly endless column-like this one is going to be. If my cabaret-show reviewing days will be over (as chronicled here), I might as well go out with a bang-and relieve my procrastination guilt during holiday season. Now I can scratch one New Year's resolution off the list.

t's a New Year's tradition that doesn't get old. For the fourth year in-a-row Marilyn Maye rings out 2014 with back-to-back shows on New Year's Eve. Then after New Year's Eve, the merry-making continues for seven nights between January 2 and 10, as Maye launches into a run of her hard-partying "By Request" shows. Joining the preternaturally young Maye on her 15th Metropolitan Room engagement are her nimble trio consisting of pianist/conductor Billy Stritch, bassist Tom Hubbard, and drummer Ray Marchica.

Legendary Broadway star, actress/singer Betty Buckley will be performing the songs from her recently released album GHOSTLIGHT, produced by 13 time GRAMMY Award Winner T Bone Burnett in a concert featuring a six piece band at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in Los Angeles on January 24, 2015. Buckley will also be performing on January 17th at the Annenberg in Palm Springs with pianist Christian Jacob.
Urban Stages, in association with producer/director/lyricist and Director of Musical Programming Peter Napolitano, is proud to announce that cabaret legend Marilyn Maye will kick off the Holiday Season for WINTER RHYTHMS 2014 on Thursday, December 4 at 7PM only with a special appearance in Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas: The Songs of Hugh Martin, a centennial celebration of the Hollywood and Broadway songwriter best known for Meet Me in St. Louis and Best Foot Forward. Marilyn Maye joins Eric Comstock, Barbara Fasano, Minda Larsen, Marissa Mulder, Sigali, Melissa Ritz, Molly Ryan, Dan Levinson, Deborah Silver, Gabrielle Stravelli and the vocal group Duchess in an evening conceived and hosted by Wall Street Journal columnist Will Friedwald. Musical Director for the evening will be Tedd Firth.
NiCori Studios and Productions and Irvington Town Hall Theater announce the second performance in the Cabaret on the Hudson series. The performance will be held on Monday, December 8 at 8pm. Cabaret on the Hudson is a series that features three outstanding cabaret performers or small groups, each bringing a 25 minute sampling of their New York City cabaret shows to Westchester, NY. Many of the performers are Broadway veterans and have performed in New York City venues such as 54 BELOW, the Oak Room at the Algonquin, Birdland, Feinstein's at Loews Regency, Iridium, the Metropolitan Room and Jazz at Lincoln Center to name a few. Cabaret on the Hudson will be hosted by multi-nominated Cabaret singer and host of the Music at the Mansion series, Corinna Sowers Adler and will feature Benet Braun on piano.

The Carlyle, a Rosewood Hotel, continues to be home court for Jim Caruso & Billy Stritch. They are back at Bemelmans Bar for an extended Sunday night residency. The performances build upon their recent run of shows in the intimate, storied New York City lounge, favorites not only of music fans and critics, but also of fellow artists. Jim Caruso & Billy Stritch shows are a place where some of the city's foremost entertainers go to commune with their own-and sometimes sit-in for a song or two-on their nights off. The pair will be at Bemelmans with their evening of swinging standards Sunday nights, through Dec. 31st. Dropping in Sunday night were Ron Abel and Chuck Steffan creators of 'Hazel' a new musical bound for Broadway. Noted composer/lyricist/arranger and two-time Grammy Award nominee Larry Kerchner will be celebrated on Sunday, November 30, 2014, at 7 PM at Stage 72 at The Triad, 158 West 72nd Street, in Manhattan. More than a dozen stellar music performers from New York's theatre, cabaret and jazz stages will perform songs with melodies, lyrics and/or arrangements created by Kerchner, at this third annual tribute performance, titled "Hidden Treasures III: More Songs of Larry Kerchner."
I have to admit that I was very excited when I read that veteran actor Michael Winther would be returning to Center Stage to star in the Pulitzer Prize winning musical NEXT TO NORMAL. It was Director David Schweizer who asked Winther to come to Center Stage for the role of Dan. Schweizer also directed Winther back in 2007 when he played the role of Dromio in BOYS FROM SYRACUSE along with Manu Narayan and Paolo Montalban. Winther became friends with Narayan when the two both worked on Broadway at the same time, Narayan was the star of BOMBAY DREAMS at the Broadway Theater and Winther was down the street at the Winter Garden in MAMMA MIA! Winther related it was Narayan who called him up last year to take Narayan's place in San Paolo, Brazil to perform in the KIezmer musical THE NIGHT IN THE OLD MARKET PLACE. So Winther spent ten days in Brazil along with another actress from the BOYS FROM SYRACUSE, Charlotte Cohn.
