By: Sally Henry Fuller Nov. 22, 2014
Wallis Center for the Performing Arts (aka The Wallis) announces Betty Buckley: Ghostlight for a single performance on Saturday, January 24, 2015 at 8:00 pm in the Bram Goldsmith Theater.
Buckley and her band will take The Wallis stage for an evening of music from her new album Ghostlight. The new recording re-unites her with longtime friend and producer T Bone Burnett on the release by Palmetto Records. When Buckley and Burnett were both 19 years old, living in Fort Worth, TX, they began making music together. Buckley, who has been called "The Voice of Broadway," is one of the theater's most respected and legendary leading ladies. Burnett's highly sought after involvement in music, film, TV and stage projects is marked by his uncanny ability to successfully combine his unique artistic sensibilities with massive commercial appeal. These two friends and talents created an atmosphere that takes us to another time and place.Stephen Holden of The New York Times wrote, "The return of the much-missed Betty Buckley... in support of her superior pop album, Ghostlight -- is a special occasion. The record, produced by her fellow Texan, T Bone Burnett, touches all four corners of Ms. Buckley's complicated sensibility: the Texan country girl, the Broadway diva, the New Age jazz singer and the aficionado of great, offbeat pop songs. The show amounted to a master class in song selection and interpretation by a voice...and sensibility of an interpreter, who, at her best, can take you to the center of the Earth all by herself."Located in the heart of Beverly Hills, California, the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts (aka "The Wallis") brings audiences world-class theater, dance and music, performed by many of the world's most talented and sought-after artists. With eclectic programming that mirrors the diverse landscape of Los Angeles, and its notability as the entertainment capital of the world, The Wallis offers original and revered works from across the US and around the globe. This fall marks The Wallis' second season, which also includes its prestigious "Arts& Ideas" series, conversations with guests from the realms of culture, literature and politics. Housed in a breathtaking 70,000-square-foot venue designed by Zoltan E. Pali, FAIA of Studio Pali Fekete architects, The Wallis celebrates the classic and the modern. This is reflected in the juxtaposition of the restored, original 1933 Beverly Hills Post Office (on the National Register of Historic Places) that serves as the theater's dramatic yet welcoming lobby, and houses the 150-seat Lovelace Studio Theater, as well as a theater school for young people, and the contemporary 500-seat, state-of-the-art Bram Goldsmith Theater. Together, these two structures embrace the city's history and its future, creating a performing arts destination for LA-area visitors and residents alike.
Betty Buckley is an actress/singer whose career spans theater, film, television and concert halls around the world. She most recently was inducted into the Theater Hall of Fame for 2012.
