Adapted and directed by interdisciplinary theatre artist Gwen Dobie, Theatre @ York's Beggar's Opera (http://finearts.yorku.ca/beggarsopera) previews January 28, opens January 29 and runs to February 1. It unfolds as a play within a play with a decidedly modern vibe, bringing the audience into the action. The show transforms York University's Sandra Faire & Ivan Fecan Theatre into the Lincoln Fields Correctional Institute, where visitors are subjected to 21st century surveillance measures to witness the 'inmates' performing within. The stars came out on Monday night to toast the 100th birthday of Toronto's historic Elgin and Winter Garden Theatres. Dubbed the 'chandelier gala' the fun filled evening was designed to celebrate the last remaining double decker theatre in the world and to raise money to restore it's gorgeous chandelier. On hand were cast members from the all Canadian company of CATS, Stratford Festival's production of Tommy, as well as many people performing from shows gone by such as Joseph, Ain't Misbehaving, Crazy for You and more. Schwartz's is currently playing through Saturday, May 7. A total of 21 performances will delight montrealers and tourists alike. Schwartz's: The Musical will be presented every day from Wednesday July 20 to Sunday August 7, 2011 at 8PM (except Monday July 25 and Monday August 1).
