MDR to Present THE SUBJECT, Begin. 10/12

MIDTOWN DIRECT REP (MDR), the company that brought New Jersey the award-winning Rated P for Parenthood and Listen to Your Mother: North Jersey, returns to the South Orange Performing Arts Center (SOPAC) with Theatre in the Loft, a series of staged readings of new plays and musicals. Chisa Hutchinson?s The Subject, directed by Jade King Carroll, premieres on Sunday, October 12 at 7 pm at SOPAC (One Sopac Way, South Orange, NJ, 07079). The reading is $15 and open to the public. Sebastian Arcelus, Jenny Bacon & More to Join Olympia Dukakis in Midtown Direct Rep's ABSENCE Reading, 1/5

Midtown Direct Rep (MDR), the resident theater company at South Orange Performing Arts Center (SOPAC), has announced that Academy Award-winner Olympia Dukakis will be joined by Midtown Direct Rep company members Sebastian Arcelus, Jenny Bacon, Emily Bauer and Stephanie Kurtzuba, plus special guests Kendra Jain and Dan Ziskie in a one-night-only staged reading of ABSENCE, a new play about memory loss. Former-actress turned director Margaret Whitton stages this new work by emerging playwright Peter M. Floyd that was honored by the Kennedy Center's 2012 Jean Kennedy Smith Award and the 2012 Kendeda Graduate Playwriting Competition. The performance, part of MDR's Theatre in the Loft series focusing on new and innovative American theatre, is Sunday, January 5, 2014 at 7 pm at SOPAC (One SOPAC Way, South Orange, NJ, 07079). The performance will be followed by a discussion with the playwright, the cast and creative team. In ABSENCE, an excitingly theatrical play about aging, power, grace and imagination, Olympia Dukakis plays Helen, an iron-willed woman who suffers from memory loss. As her sense of self dissolves with her memories, she struggles to find meaning in her new existence.

THE COTTAGE and More Set for APAC's 13th Season

The Astoria Performing Arts Center (APAC), recipient of the 2012 Caffe Cino Fellowship Award from the Innovative Theatre Foundation, has announced their 13th season will include a world premiere play by Sandy Rustin (Rated P (for Parenthood)) THE COTTAGE, directed by Adam Dannheisser (Rock of Ages, resident director), and Rodgers and Hammerstein's ALLEGRO, directed by Artistic Director Tom Wojtunik. APAC's performance venue is located at the Good Shepherd United Methodist Church, 30-44 Crescent St (@30th Rd), in Astoria, Queens. Stages Festival and Midtown Direct Rep Read 7.5 WONDROUS ACT(S) OF TRUE LOVE Today

The New Jersey Theatre Alliance and Midtown Direct Rep will present a reading of the play 7.5 Wondrous Act(s) of True Love by Jeremy Desmon as part of Midtown Direct Rep's recently launched play development series focused on new and innovative American theatre. Today's March 17th reading is part of The Stages Festival, an annual statewide program that provides discounted and free theatre performances, workshops and events throughout the month of March. This performance, typically $15 per ticket, will have a limited quantity of free tickets available as part of the Stages Festival. (Limit two per patron while supplies last).
