Freedom Theatre to Present THE ISLAND at Georgetown University's Davis Performing Arts Center Today

Following sold-out shows at its community-based theatre and cultural center in Jenin Refugee Camp, Palestine, Freedom Theatre performs the renowned South African anti-apartheid play 'The Island' at Georgetown University's Davis Performing Arts Center, Devine Studio Theatre today, Sept. 16 and Tuesday, Sept. 17 at 7:30 p.m., as part of its inaugural U.S. tour. This historic event is presented by the Laboratory for Global Performance and Politics, (The Lab), an initiative of the Georgetown University Theater and Performance Studies Program and the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service. The play will be performed in English.

OEDIPUS REX Set for 'Great Authors Out Loud' Series at Centenary Stage Today

?Renowned actors and directors Randall Duk Kim and Anne Occhiogrosso return to the Centenary Stage to lead the popular Great Authors Out Loud Series this season, opening with the legendary classic Oedipus Rex today, September 15th at 3 pm in The Kutz Theatre of the Lackland Center in Hackettstown.

Laguna Playhouse to Present FALLEN ANGELS, Begin. 10/12

The Laguna Playhouse Executive and Artistic Directors, Karen Wood and Ann E. Wareham are delighted to present a new look at a hilarious classic, fresh off a critically-acclaimed run at the Pasadena Playhouse. Prepare to be intoxicated by FALLEN ANGELS, written by Noel Coward and directed by Art Manke. 'This is a deliriously giddy look at a rarely produced play by the one-and-only master of the sophisticated comedy, Noel Coward,' offers Wood. 'We are thrilled to present this brilliant and wickedly fun production to our subscribers and audiences and we know they will leave our theatre as charmed by this production as we are!' adds Wareham. FALLEN ANGELS will begin previews on Tuesday, October 8 and will open on Saturday, October 12 at 7:30pm and run through Sunday, November 3, 2013 at the Laguna Playhouse, 606 Laguna Canyon Road in Laguna Beach.

2013 Philadelphia Fringe Festival Kicks Off Today

Taking place today, September 5-22, the 2013 Fringe Festival presented by FringeArts (formerly known as the Philadelphia Live Arts Festival and Philly Fringe) is bigger and better than ever in its 17th year, with a brand-new headquarters on the Delaware River Waterfront and 18 days of both presented and neighborhood performances in cutting-Edge Theater, dance, music, visual and multidisciplinary arts. This year's lineup of Presented Fringe includes seven International Artists, four world premieres and two reimagined productions from previous Fringe Festivals.

2013 Philadelphia Fringe Festival Kicks Off this Weekend

The 2013 Fringe Festival (Sept. 5-22, 2013), presented by FringeArts (formerly the Philadelphia Live Arts Festival and Philly Fringe), kicks off this weekend with cutting-edge contemporary theater and dance from as far away as Greece and Norway and as close as our own backyard. Opening-weekend performances include two international works of theater (Jo Stromgren Kompani's The Society and Attis Theatre's AJAX, the madness); two remounts from past Festival seasons (Pig Iron Theatre Company's Pay Up and Swim Pony Performing Arts' The Ballad of Joe Hill); and a world premiere from a much-loved Philadelphia choreographer (Brian Sanders' JUNK, Hush Now Sweet High Heels and Oak).

MARIE ANTOINETTE with Marin Ireland and World Premiere of AN OCTOROON Set for Soho Rep's 2013-14 Season

Perhaps the defining characteristic of Soho Rep, under the artistic direction of Sarah Benson, is the institution's commitment to artists creating surprisingly big theatrical events in its very small space on Walker Street. Soho Rep's 2013-14 season, announced today, provides ample evidence of that commitment, comprising two shows that are among the biggest the organization has ever produced: the New York premiere of David Adjmi's Marie Antoinette, directed by Rebecca Taichman and featuring Marin Ireland (Blasted); and Branden Jacobs-Jenkins' An Octoroon, directed by Benson.

BWW Reviews: Glass Mind's ANTIGONE Perfects the Art of Tragedy

No one writes theater like the Ancient Greeks; after all, they invented it (at least the western variety). I was reminded of this once again as I found myself lost in the high drama of Glass Mind Theatre's adaptation of Antigone, one of Sophocles' three plays revolving around Oedipus (he of psychological complex fame), king of Thebes, who unknowingly killed his father and then married his mother. And it only gets better from there.
