Music, Theatre & Dance at Oakland University Presents Sophocles ANTIGONE Today

By:

Music, Theatre and Dance at Oakland University is pleased to open the third season of its Arts-After- Work (AAW) series with today's Sept. 5 staging of Sophocles' "Antigone" by students in the Classical Theatre Study in Greece program.

Set to begin at 6 p.m., the performance is an adaptation for a modern audience that features a nonverbal prologue and choreographed stage fight using traditional Greek masks.

"I like to create a prologue that's part of the performance experience so when the actual play begins, (the audience is) already engaged," said Theatre Professor Karen Sheridan. "It empowers them to understand the story in the same way as a classical audience."

Other highlights of the fall AAW series include the Student Showcase on Oct. 3, a concert featuring the OU Chamber Orchestra on Nov. 21 and a performance of Oakland Dance Theatre and OU Repertory Dance Company on Dec. 5.

The winter AAW series offers an equally diverse array of performances, including jazz, musical theatre, brass band, opera and a premiere of theProvost's Concert, featuring Oakland University's newly-appointed senior vice president for academic affairs and provost, Dr. James P. Lentini - a distinguished composer and guitarist.

Area arts lovers are encouraged to avoid rush hour traffic and enjoy intimate, engaging and top-quality live performances for the AAW's unique "Pay What You Wish" cost of admission. Tickets can be purchased ahead of time online, by phone or in person. Complete information is available atoakland.edu/tickets.

The staging of "Antigone" will take place in the Varner Studio Theatre. All other AAW events begin at 6 p.m. in Varner Recital Hall on the campus of Oakland University. Interactive and printable campus maps can be found at oakland.edu/map or by typing Varner Hall into a smart phone.

Additional information, including a full AAW season lineup, is available at oakland.edu/artsafterwork. A full Music, Theatre and Dance season brochure can be downloaded at oakland.edu/mtd.
