Opera Atelier's esteemed Co-Artistic Directors Marshall Pynkoski C.M. and Jeannette Lajeunesse Zingg C.M. have been awarded the extraordinary recognition of Officers of the Order of Arts and Letters (Officiers de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres) by the French Republic a?" the first time a Canadian couple has received this distinction simultaneously. The award acknowledges the pair's outstanding contributions to the enrichment of French cultural heritage in France and throughout the world. The ceremony of investiture will take place on the stage of the Royal Opera House at Versailles in December 2021, when Pynkoski and Lajeunesse Zingg return to mount a Château de Versailles production.

Marking an exciting new era for Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra (LACO) and classical music in Los Angeles, Jaime Martín makes his first appearance as Music Director when the 2019-20 season launches on Saturday, September 28, 8 pm, at the Alex Theatre, and Sunday, September 29, 2019, 7 pm, at Royce Hall. Martín opens his inaugural season of sweeping programming with the world premiere of Begin, a LACO commission by Andrew Norman. The program also features Berlioz' Les nuits d'été, one of the composer's most popular works, featuring mezzo soprano Anne Sofie von Otter, and Beethoven's celebratory Symphony No. 7. A pre-concert conversation with Martín and 2019 Pulitzer Prize Winner Ellen Reid, who succeeds Norman this season as LACO's Creative Advisor and Composer-in-Residence, takes place at 7 pm on Saturday and 6 pm Sunday. The Saturday conversation will be livestreamed on LACO's Facebook page.

Famed Mexican-born jazz vocalist Magos Herrera joins the genre-defying string quartet Brooklyn Rider (Johnny Gandelsman, violin; Colin Jacobsen, violin; Nicholas Cords, viola; and Michael Nicolas, cello), hailed as a?oethe future of chamber musica?? (Strings), for an unforgettable musical journey reinterpreting Latin classics from their 2018 recording, Dreamers, on Wednesday, October 10, 2019, in the Bram Goldsmith Theater at The Wallis. The album, on Sony Music Masterworks, features a collection of works from the Ibero-American songbook as well as pieces written to texts by Octavio Paz, Rubén Darío and Federico García Lorca and reimagined by such noted arrangers as Jaques Morelenbaum, Gonzalo Grau, Diego Schissi, Guillermo Klein and Brooklyn Rider's own Colin Jacobsen. This fall, cello soloist Maya Beiser and composer/conductor Evan Ziporyn embark on a U.S. tour with Ziporyn's Ambient Orchestra, bringing Bowie Symphonic: Blackstar to the Moss Arts Center at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA (Friday, October 12); the Flynn Center for the Performing Arts in Burlington, VT (Saturday, October 13), Bass Concert Hall presented by Texas Performing Arts in Austin, TX (Thursday, November 1), and Bing Concert Hall presented by Stanford Live in Stanford, CA (Wednesday, November 7). Bowie Symphonic: Blackstar is a startling and soaring new version of David Bowie's entire last album Blackstar for solo cello and orchestra. Arranged for Beiser by Ziporyn, who will also conduct Ambient Orchestra, Bowie Symphonic: Blackstar has been performed to capacity audiences in Boston, Barcelona, and New York City's Central Park SummerStage. The New York Philharmonic announces Foreign Bodies, a one-night-only multidisciplinary event conducted and hosted by Esa-Pekka Salonen, concluding his tenure as The Marie-Jos e Kravis Composer-in-Residence. The concert, Friday, June 8, 2018, at 8:00 p.m., will feature Esa-Pekka Salonen's Foreign Bodies, accompanied by the World Premiere of a live video installation by Tal Rosner; Dan el Bjarnason's Violin Concerto, with Pekka Kuusisto in his New York Philharmonic debut; and Obsidian Tear, a dance work choreographed by Wayne McGregor performed by members of the Boston Ballet (Philharmonic debut) and set to Mr. Salonen's Nyx and Lachen verlernt. Foreign Bodies will be casual and multi-sensory; drinks and conversation will flow as attendees mingle with the performers, who will give additional impromptu performances throughout the event.
